It's a beauty...first thing I would do though is pull the bridge and tuners and powder coat black.

I set my string height at .070 inch/1.77mm, that works pretty good for me.
Anything lower (my Yamaha Attitude will go lower no problem) and I become the problem.
I just spoke to him on the phone. Super cool guy. He bought it new in '91 !

Or I'm sure the bridge could be replaced with something with smaller saddles, or routing the body to drop the baseplate to flush would also work.
That would work , if the new improved low action causes the strings to foul on the bridge pickup you
A - whip the pickup out.
B - remove the foam.
C - swap the screws for shorter ones.
D - cut down springs and use them instead of foam.
Course there's always option E
Buy a bass that was designed with 1mm action as it's raison d'etre .
Obligatory mention that you can easily eek out at least 1/64th lower action by setting your witness points thoroughly 
I think that the Fender 2mm/.080 setup standard makes for a bass that plays fine.
1.75mm/.070 is really nice and low for me. 1.5mm/.060 is getting looowww.
.....and man oh man is 1mm/.040 awfully low action.
Another good reason to own bolt on basses that can be easily neck shimmed.
It always surprises me when a company chooses a bridge that will not allow for low action, I don't think it's that hard to spec the right bridge to begin with.
It's also not hard to look at the neck pocket depth, neck heel thickness and bridge model that you intend to spec and make sure you've done it right to begin with.

Yes, they go in 1 way. Theres a line on the side to show the negative side (see crappy photo below)
I usually take a sharpie and mark the negative side of the board with a dot or a line before the cap is removed.
Having missed it a few pages back, in my experience, the GV necks are more shallow front to back than my Cirrus 5 neck. My Millenium 5 neck is shallower still, as was the Cirrus 5 bolt on. Thinnest to thickest, of those four, at least in my house:
