U.S. Peavey Club

Hope everyone is safe with all the bad weather and fires! I picked up a Palaedium for a great price but when I received the front pickup didn't work. Took it to the shop and they said it was a bad volume pot. So pot is replaced but after trying it at home had the same problem. I investigated a bit further and it appears the pickup is probably bad. What I checked was the balance (blend) pot and wiring. The pot only sounds the bridge pickup no mater what side it's turned to. I compared the wiring to my other Palaedium and it is the same. So it seems the only thing left is the pickup. I know the pickups were designed by Berlin and Bartolini specifically for this bass. What do you think the chances of finding a replacement pickup?

Anyone know what's inside this pickup? Not finding info on the Inter webs. After a small amount of looking around I'm guessing it's not standard. eBay Peavey has one that looks like this pickup but not listed as a replacement for this model

This pickup will need to be rebuilt due to no replacement? I'm wondering if this is built by same company that built the VFLs. If so these are a PITA to open up.

Too early Matt.

G&B only came into the picture once Peavey had hired Rich Lasner and used his extensive contacts with East Asian companies. I heard Bartolini had been asked for some input regarding the Palaedium pickup design but it was never confirmed nor did it involve production.

Ok , that's good probably if the pickup needs to be rebuilt. The G&B VFLs are a nightmare to take apart. Whatever they used does not machine out easily. It's very gummy and there's a metal mesh that turns into metal splinters. No fun at all.

Whatever was used for SF pickups is the easiest to machine out.

@Larry Balara if you need a rebuild we can do it.

I got another Peavey, and I decided it was high time for a family portrait.

I got the red Fury six or seven years ago and it quickly became a favorite player. I fell in love hard with the feel of the neck. I put a Bartolini 8S in it and it sounds great too. When the black Fury popped up for sale locally I got it as a backup. But my band has a few songs where a bridge pickup would be beneficial, so I looked for something that would give me that with the feel of the Furies. I came across the Foundation, which also feels great but it has its own tone—the neck Super Ferrite doesn't sound like the P-type pickups in the Furies. I was thinking about getting one of the Furies routed for a bridge pickup. But then a friend offered me the Forum. Before he told me about it I had not realized that model existed! As I understand it they only had the PJ configuration and the Fury neck profile for a short time before switching to humbuckers. But this looks to be exactly what I wanted.

This Forum used to belong to mech. He was several owners back from me, but that’s provenance—at least around here! It’s certainly a nice example. It has pickups that look like DiMarzios. I haven’t opened it up yet, but my friend who traded it to me says mech’s business card is under the pickguard.

I’m pretty sure this Forum is going to become my go-to bass for gigs.

(Note: some truss rod covers are off because the weather this month has wreaked havoc on the setup of just about every stringed instrument I own.)
