U.S. Peavey Club

I can totally see how the Geezer could have that effect. I use flats with it on my pinstripe Fury and the combination sits really nicely in the mix.
I was referring to the post pinstripe fury pickups, I haven't used a geezer yet, just a quarter pounder in the milestone. Everyone seems to love the geezer though .

Best way I would compare the 5 wire to the later, hotter "fat wire" fury pickup, is that the 5 wire seemed to have more clarity in the upper registers and the fat wire was maybe a little fatter in the low end, but that could just be the hotter output and/or the fact that each bass is a different piece(s) of wood. I did use the same kind of strings for the comparison after getting the pinstripe.

Either way I'm glad to have both flavors in the arsenal. I just wish I had the free cash to snag the SF fury that was looking at me.

@ubernator
What is a 5 wire split P pickup ? I've saw plenty 4 wire + ground humbuckers and no end of 2 wire + ground split P's,3 wire + ground if you include the linking wire, but never a 5 wire.

I just can't get my head around what the extra 2 wires are for. On an active split P I could see the point,it needs power but on a passive ?? It's not like a split P gets coil tapped or series/parallel wired.

Put me out my misery and please spill the beans :)

5th wire is the sheild/ground, so it is what you consider a 4+ each coil has 2 leads like it was a 4 conducter Humbucker. They come from the factory with 2 wires soldered together to make it serial. But if one wanted to they could wire in a switch or push pull to add a parallel mode.

But he told me about another peavey that needs work he is selling, no case. Turns out it is a similar vintage of foundation, but the logo was sanded off (the pinstripes and made in usa was kept) and it is missing a knob and pot, most likely just converted to a VV, hopefully just that. Has Gibson top hat knobs Rather than the P knobs the fury had.

I asked him to send me a pic of the electronics, but I am probably going to take out the money and hope I make it back on the gig on Saturday. Unfortunately we opted to pool the draw with one of the other bands, and it looks like the lions share of the crowd will be for us and they won't bring many, but hopefully they pull some weight and add people to the room. 150 people between us and them would be awesome, but turnouts can be as low as 30-50 and then nobody but the promoter gets paid...

This foundy looks to be mahogany, do you think it was stripped or came that way natural?

Do the ubs a favor and don't try to snatch this one from under me :) I have wanted an sf foundy and can live without the stock pots and caps. Can anyone here make me a waterslide decal with the logo and presumably big letter foundation font if I get it?

I think the body is original, same exact color mahogany as my Patriot, which is all stock.
Your right, no big deal on the pots and knobs, the important Foundation parts are the SF pups and the neck (as you well know) ...and in this case, the upgrade mahogany body.
I think those tuners may not be original, but not really sure.
Nice find, I'm glad you are finally getting a SF Foundation.

well I did miss his email by a couple hours and my question about a pic of the pots was not sent until almost 11pm local time. Anything can happen, it is priced low.

His fury had the same tuners. And I have seen those tuners on many furies foundys and patriots of the period, so they are probably original, they didn't always get the titans, and I have seen so many pics of peaveys with those tuners from the early to mid 80s

The only hesitation I have (other than both pickups working), is the truss rod. I still don't have a tool to check it, and both of his peaveys are missing the tr cover, which means they have certainly been adjusted. I always knuckle rap the back of the neck to check for broken trus rods when I buy a bass. It is 55 miles away and 58 minutes middle of the night, probably close to 2 hours in traffic, 37 miles on a notoriusly traffic riddled freeway, which I drive about 20 miles on to one of my band practice locations at the tail end of rush hour and that drive is 45-50+ minutes, and the traffic at the pass after that I need to go through to get to the bass is sooooo bad that it was where some of the first express toll lanes in the region were built. And I am not set up for a toll roads account.

I hope I didn't jinx it by posting. I think I will send another email letting him know my intention to try to come get it today. Asking him to take the plate off and send a pic first is a hesitation that may cost me a chance at it. Gonna go email him right now and let him know if he can come down $10 to help with gas, it is a done deal as long as the neck and pickups are good.

I really need to jump on this one.

I don't know what price he is asking, but the mahogany body makes it nicer than regular Foundations, I think.
There must be a Gibson truss rod tool you can lay hands on, maybe your guitar player?

About what a beat up fury goes for... My guitar player rather pays his tech to touch a truss rod. I have 2 Furies with 2 piece necks, so I need to get one of those wrenches sooner or later. Maybe it would fit my 1984 Yamaha sbg2000 as well?

Part of me is regretting inquiring about the possibility of a small token discount to help with gas, but I did it and have to wait for the results. Mahogany may have been an upgrade option, but wouldn't it have a darker tone? Probably night and day from my maple body vfl foundation.

Now it is just a waiting game.

I'm thinking that's not the original neck. That's probably why the waterslide is removed. Could be from a variety of basses, but they are all interchangeable so it's not a big deal. The body shape is definitely 80"s era. Mahogany would definitely be a special deal. Usually would be a satin finish but can't really tell with all the dust/dirt on it. Definitely a worthy project though for the right price.

I was thinking the same thing. Hope it is a foundy neck, I don't really want a wide nut like a T series, gen 1 fury or patriot. I will ask him to measure it perhaps. I don't want to sound too hesitant in case he has others interested, but it is 110 miles of total driving involved and gas has been going up since Harvey.

No email reply yet, I'm debating trying to sleep, or trying to get an early bird call in

The '92 Foundation bass I bought back in July has become my main player, but I really like the look of the 83-90 version of this bass. I have read that the body of the later ones are smaller, but by how much. So does anyone have a drawing of both bodies showing the size difference. Thanks in advance

Thank you I see what you mean more on the 2 fury's picture . I would still like to get an 83-89 Foundation in Black & Maple one day, I like the pinstripe headstock .
A black on maple 85 Foundation is my only 4 string Foundation....love the thing but it stupid cheap.....covered in stickers and dings and scratches but it cleaned up and adjusted fine.

Its wearing Fender 9050 flats for the time being....i found the rounds that were on it too clanky and too sort of modern sounding....the 9050's are a bit too stiff for me though.

Maybe i should go with tapewounds or half rounds?

Try Infeld flats. I hated the feel of flats before the TI flats. They all sounded good, but felt way to tense. TI sounds good and feels good. Pricey, but they last longer than other flats I have used. My G-V and Tobias Growler both wear them.
