UA solo 610 input signal level

For those of you that have used the UA 610, specifically the solo version, to record bass with:

As I've been using the 610 to record a p-bass and a ray34 through the Hi-Z DI input, I find the preamp is not being driven that much even with the gain maxed at 10; ie: the "signal " indicator light only even starts lighting up close to 8, and hardly ever reaches orange even at 10, and there is only a moderate amount of saturation/thickness added to the signal.

To take advantage of full range of tones the 610 can provide with higher gain level, I have to either boost the signal into the DI input or go through an active DI into the mic XLR input.

No big deal, but I was curious to ask about other's experience since this seems to be a pretty popular DI+pre for bass guitar: I was expecting the gain range to be more "user friendly" when used with some bread and butter basses

On my LA-610 mkII I've not had any issues driving the hi-z input sufficiently. I've not tried slamming the front end of it, but no extra equipment was necessary to get well beyond sufficient gain for tracking. I could see potentially struggling if you were trying to slam the front end for distortion, but admittedly I've not tried that with mine.

To be clear, you have the *switch* set to Hi-Z? That's where it should be for a passive instrument.

oh I have more than enough gain for tracking, this is indeed the scenario of "slamming" the front end. Not looking for distortion, but there is some part of the upper range of more saturated gain (before distortion, so in the orange) that I cannot really reach without some extra push. As I said, no big deal, was just curious to see if other's experience matches mine in this scenario
