Uh Oh - Maybe This Stupid Coronavirus is Having an Effect on Audience Numbers

My band had a show scheduled for Saturday night. We pulled the plug on it earlier this week. It's just irresponsible to be drawing a crowd right now; it's not safe for anyone, including the band.

To put this in proper music industry context, here's an incomplete list, drawn from various Billboard articles, of performers (musicians, comedians, etc.) and venues that have recently canceled performances, tours, or other events because of the Covid-19 pandemic:

Santana
Bob Dylan
Alice Cooper
Thom Yorke
Tool
Wilco
The Who
Taylor Swift
Billie Eilish
Third Eye Blind
Chris Stapleton
Kenny Chesney
Pentatonix
Zac Brown Band
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
They Might Be Giants
Green Day
New Order
Blake Shelton
Sammy Hagar
Lionel Richie
Lauryn Hill
Kelly Clarkson
Mariah Carey
Madonna
Cher
Celine Dion
Reba McEntire
Marc Anthony
Pearl Jam
Bikini Kill
The Pixies
Yes
Styx
Queen with Adam Lambert
The Allman Betts Band
Slipknot
Whitesnake
Richard Marx
A-Ha
Miley Cyrus
Avril Lavigne
Jonas Brothers
Robbie Williams
David Archuleta
Trevor Noah
Amoeba Music (all in-store performances canceled)
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2020 induction ceremony postponed)
The Apollo Theater (Harlem)
The Grand Ole Opry
The Country Music Hall of Fame
SXSW Festival
Download Festival
Dark Mofo Festival (Australia)
Carnegie Hall
The Metropolitan Opera (NYC)
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra

Yes, we had a gig scheduled for the evening of 3/19, but we pulled the plug last night. Good thing we did too because Santa Clara County just closed all schools for the next 4 weeks (actually 3 + spring break, already scheduled), and asked to keep all public gatherings to 35 or less (we easily draw that many on a bad night). Still considering a couch concert - will try some webcasting over the weekend.

3 weeks for San Jose Unified as they are scheduled through Apr 3rd at this point. It's also important to note the county health department only closed schools to give them time to figure out how to resume safely (Internet, Google classroom, etc.). Says so on their website.

Given that the district is mismanaged (Ms 74hc works there), they wouldn't be able to make any worthy adjustments in time. About ten years ago, they prepared for this. Paid a contracting company to install fiber to the schools. Trenching streets... the whole nine yards. It just sits at the corner of the school properties, unterminated still to this day.

We won't go into their mega-millions on Cisco Telepresence which they abandoned as well.

Yeah, but they will still get royalty checks whereas the bulk of the musicians in the industry won't get anything. I'm not knocking on them, just pointing out the distortion in our industry. Those that run and control the royalty money system should be called upon to rid of this distortion.

We just cancelled a couple of shows. It's a bummer, but we feel it's the right thing to do for our members and the public.
Here's something to keep in mind, too: We're reaching a point where failing to cancel gigs can be bad for your reputation.
It sucks, but this feels like a critical period in the crisis. We should know better what we're dealing with in a couple months.

My wife and I both gig, me in two originals bands and her a classical violinist. Between the two of us we’ve had 12 gigs cancelled so far... might be more coming. These were all venues/promoters pulling the plug on the shows.

Luckily I’m a public school music teacher and will still get paid, even though my district is now closed for 4 weeks. So me, my wife and our two kids will be fine and I’m thanking myself for moving from a self-employed gigging musician career to a teaching career with actual benefits, retirement, and overall security for times like this.

We cancelled tonight's gig a few hours ago. I initiated it after my S.O. begged me not to go tonight. The band discussed it this morning via FB messenger. My BL, who more than the rest of us is depends on gig money, announced on fb that she was cancelling the show. That's leadership, friends. I feel like I did the right thing, but I"m also miserable right now. What are we going to do? If the band is anything, we are in the social contact business. For five years, we've built up this whole community of people for whom we are (well...have been) regular weekend entertainment. Now I'm afraid it's all going to go to pieces, and it was me who made the first crack. Again, I think I did the right thing, but at the moment it is cold comfort. Cocktail hour is going to come early tonight.

Over here in northern Germany, it's quite simple. Everything is cancelled. Cinemas, Concerts, Discos, Clubs, Theaters, you name it. Nothing is happening. Schools are closed. Everyone is politely asked to stay at home as much as possible.
But we're Germans. Work is still on for those that don't do theatre, music, teaching or suchlike.

So far just one on my calendar... Earth Day festival on 4/19. Played last night and have a gig tomorrow afternoon so at least there is still something coming in..

i've put my newer duo ... until whenever ... more time to work on tunes ..!

my summer acoustic dates don't start until , mid-June ... so we'll see..

i've taking a big enough hit from the stock market ... hopefully generating retirement $$$$ ... now 20-30% less

Hi,

I'm in before the lock just to say we've had three gigs cancelled just for the month of March. Others have been rescheduled for the late summer/fall.
