Uhhh.....gig is tomorrow......duh!

Not music related but still...

I rented a houseboat on Lake Havasu in Arizona for 10 days. My daughter's school started 11 days after the season closed so I timed the trip so we could save money for an off-season rental.

Showed up the day I thought we were supposed to. Turns out I had my dates wrong for the rental.

6 of us spent the night sleeping in our van 'cause I wasn't going to pay for two rooms.

When we finally got out on the boat We had great fun. We rented a motor boat too!

Unfortunately we had to call my daughter's school and explain why she was missing the first day of school.

Somehow, got my dates mixed up. Thought I had a gig tonight. Kept bugging the BL to send setlist. Drive 40 miles to venue. Look inside and somebody else is setting up. Def not my band. I go back to my car and recheck calendar. Gig is tomorrow. Crap! Already bought tickets to see Avengers 4 at 4:30PM. Gig is at 9pm. Movie is almost 3 hours. Gonna have to hightail it right after to make it to venue in time for downbeat.

Yep. My weekend has started out badly already!
Some years ago, I mis-looked at the calendar and went 60 miles west, found another band setting up(embarrassing because I knew them), drove the 60 back plus another 25 and got to the right place right at downbeat....

I had my sub show up to one of my gigs yesterday that I was already setup for and in my spot. Thought I was supposed to be somewhere else with another band and panicked.

Thankfully I just had an error in my calendar, but had to pay my sub my money for the gig and did it for free.

I’ll take it though. Better than missing a downbeat.

I walked into a wedding reception once, ordered a drink and struck up a conversation before I realized I was in the wrong room. Doh!
When my wife and I were young and poor, we sometimes crashed large weddings. It seemed like most of the people didn't even know each other there-- wife told me never to complain about the food-- someone might notice you don't belong!

We don't do that anymore by the way. On a side note: Enter your engagement date into your smartphone calendar. Set the reminder to 4 hours earlier than your departure time. Text the bandleader one last time to confirm everything. Hope you enjoyed your gig and the movie.

I actually keep a Google calendar. And the date was correct but for some reason, in my mind, I saw Friday instead of Saturday.

Anyway, saw the movie (started at 4:30). Hauled @$$ around 7:40. Drove the aprox. 35-40mi. Very little traffic. Got to venue around 8:20. Was setup and ready for downbeat at 9! Gig went well.

With that kind of luck maybe you should be playing the lottery!

yep - been there done that - turned up at a gig, unloaded my gear and started setting up...... then a drummer from another band came in..... we both scratched our heads, then I saw the posters on the wall of the Pub

Friday night "XXX band 8:30pm" (sorry can't remember the name of the other band)
Saturday night "Tin Nimbus 8:30pm" (my band)

Problem was I had unloaded and set my gear up on the Friday night.... so immediately got into panic mode.... I knew we had a gig on the Friday and Saturday, but had no idea where I was supposed to be on the Friday.

I didn't own a cell phone back then (mid / late 1990's) so asked at the bar for the phone number of our rhythm guitarist (who booked most of our gigs) and luckily they had it and let me use their phone to call him and he said "oh we're playing at XXX tonight.... we were wondering where you are" - turns out I was about 45 minutes away and had to haul ass to the other venue.....
I needed a couple of bourbons to calm my stress levels down!

I set off to drive to work on a public holiday once, about half way there it occurred to me that there was hardly any cars on the road so I got very suspicious. I turned on the radio and very soon my suspicion was confirmed so I turned round and went home. At least it got me up and about instead of laying around in bed.

The worst gig experience
We had a gig at a golf club, our drummer pointed it's location out to me on a map.

I arrived there to find one other car there and the place locked up. A few minutes later all the lights were turned off and a guy came out and drove away leaving just me.

I phoned our guitarist who informed me that I was at the wrong club and was about 30 miles from where I should be. Since that day I refuse to listen to our drummer when he tries to give me directions, I ask him for a post code (zip code) and let my satnav do the rest.

I set off to drive to work on a public holiday once

reminds me about 25 years ago we had daylight savings and had put our clocks forward 1 hour, but I obviously didn't and turned up to work on Monday morning 7:30am to start work and the place was empty and doors locked.... I unlocked the doors, turned the lights on and looked at the clock on the wall that said 7:30am.... then I scratched my head wondering what the heck was going on and about 8:15am someone finally turned up.... I asked them why there was no-one here and why they are late and they looked at their watch and said "it's only 7:15am - we put the clocks forward in the weekend remember"?
I had got to work at 6:30am! - I felt like such an idiot!

Keyboards in my old band did this - more than once. He even got to the point of getting completely loaded in and set up before realizing that no one else was showing up before texting one of us. Surprising that none of the bar staff thought to check in with him!

True story. Corporate Christmas gig, lotsa money. Band leader hired a second guitarist (fried of mine - excellent musician) to sit in with us. We started the gig, and about 15 minutes into the first set, a pianist comes running in (also friend of mine), puts his piano and stand down and runs out. Runs back in with amp and accessories. I decide the band leader has also hired a pianist. Sets up piano, plays two songs, gathers his composure and asks, "Is this "insert club name?" "No, it's about two blocks down the street on the right."

Packs up his gear, runs out.

lol

We still laugh about it to this day.

Get a Dolorean!

One of my drinking pals had a flight from Thailand to La Guardia.
We're sitting there getting ripped on San Miguel Light & he mentions his flight is at 02:00 the following day.

We reminded him that was in only two hours time.
The airport is two hours away, so there was literally no way he was going to make his flight.

It did give us a lot of space for ribbing him later!
