Uhhh.....gig is tomorrow......duh!

True story. Corporate Christmas gig, lotsa money. Band leader hired a second guitarist (fried of mine - excellent musician) to sit in with us. We started the gig, and about 15 minutes into the first set, a pianist comes running in (also friend of mine), puts his piano and stand down and runs out. Runs back in with amp and accessories. I decide the band leader has also hired a pianist. Sets up piano, plays two songs, gathers his composure and asks, "Is this "insert club name?" "No, it's about two blocks down the street on the right."

Packs up his gear, runs out.

We still laugh about it to this day.

I love it when that happens and it's the venue's fault. I drive happily home for an early night humming my favourite song "The Invoice Remains The Same" all the way.

So it begs the obvious question-- would you rather be home on your couch getting paid for the gig or onstage getting paid for the gig?

I've had more gigs than I can really handle over the last 5 years, a rare paid night off is just fine. My gigs are jobs and any artistic fulfilment topped out some time ago. My playing is nothing special though, so a paid night at home practicing (and with my family) beats most gigs for me. I find more personal satisfaction in making progress on some bit of technique that troubles me (and there is plenty) than a gig in some fleapit I wouldn't otherwise be seen dead in. But the bills don't pay themselves.

So it begs the obvious question-- would you rather be home on your couch getting paid for the gig or onstage getting paid for the gig?

if you can leave your car at home and not use any gas, not go out in cold weather (if it is cold where the OP is) and stay indoors with a good coffee and the TV, then yes I'd rather do that too sometimes.

I remember a few years ago I travelled to a gig for almost an hour, got there to be told 'sorry we don't want a band tonight'... after some negotiating with our guitarist they agreed to pay us about $20-30 each for gas and gave us a free drink on the bar... I got home to find my wife watching TV just starting to eat a large block of chocolate.... she looked disappointed because she knew she would have to share the chocolate with me!

Excellent that you can do what you love and get paid for it.
