When I was last in the market for a new bass, I made a playlist for each of the bass brands I was thinking of. I listened to those playlists non-stop. The idea is that after listening to these tracks for a while, I really got what each bass was about. After that I made my final decision.

For all those that launch "This Bass vs That Bass" threads - I thought set lists may be most helpful. This set list has been developed by the collective contributions of the thread.

Here's the list that's been developed by this thread:

Burnin' for You - BOC
The Game - Disturbed
Bleed it out - Linkin Park
Just a Girl - No Doubt
Another One Bites the Dust - Queen
Red Flag - Billy Talent
The Bends - Radiohead
Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
Paradise - Sade
Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
I'm Gonna Tear your Playhouse Down - Paul Young
Get on the Floor - Michael Jackson
George Duke - Silly Fighting
The Dark Eternal Night - Dream Theater
Fame - David Bowie
Good Times - Chic
She Sells Sanctuary - The Cult
Just what I needed - The Cars
Waiting Room - Fugazi
The Science of Selling Yourself Short - Less than Jake
Stomp - The Brothers Johnson
The Widow - The Mars Volta

Thunderstruck - AC/DC
Burnin' For You - Blue Oyster Cult
The Game - Disturbed
Bleed it Out - Linkin Park
Just a Girl - No Doubt
Red Flag - Billy Talent

I wanted to have Flea on the list but I don't know for sure what songs he plays a Ray on. There was also a great live version of "Ashes to Ashes" here;

But again it's not a standard studio recording.

What great Musicman Stingray tracks am I missing from this list?

Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I'm pretty positive that Thunderstruck (along with the rest of the Razor's Edge album) was recorded on a J-bass.

Smooth Operator - Paul Denman with Sade
Just about anything that Tony Levin has done with Peter Gabriel!

+1 on Levin, especially the 'So' album. Music Man goodness all over those tracks!

I'd also recommend anything by Bernard Edwards (suprised he wasn't mentioned yet!).

And sorry to jump on the 'wet balnket' bandwagon, but I think Tony Kanal recorded 'Just A Girl' (the whole Tragic Kingdom album, actually) with his trusty old Yamaha. He only used the Strigray in the video IIRC.

I am 95% sure that Just a Girl was done on a SR5. It might be the only track on that album that ISN'T done on the Yamaha. He hits the low D pretty hard in the verse sections, and tuning the Yamaha to Drop-D would make for some stretching during the chorus sections. Also, the bass tone on that track is really different from the rest of the album IMO.

But, if it turns out that he didn't use the SR5 on Just a Girl, Tony K definitely used the SR5 on A Simple Kind of Life. So you can add that one to your list pretty safely.

This is good. I'll drop No Doubt if we're not certain what was used in the recording. So far I have;

Burnin' For You - Blue Oyster Cult
The Game - Disturbed
Bleed it Out - Linkin Park
Red Flag - Billy Talent
Smooth Operator - Sade
Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
Same old song and dance - Aerosmith
Aeroplane - RHCP

Are we sure on Killing in the Name? I was going to put that one in but wasn't certain. It sounds like a MM to me but...

Definitely a Stingray on that one.

PLEASE don't leave out Bernard Edwards (Chic, for the uninformed)! 'Good Times', 'Le Freak', 'My Forbidden Lover', etc., etc., etc.... any of them will do! :smug:

Good call on 'Aeroplane', papersen. The perfect Stingray slap tone, IMHO.
