Ultimate Musicman playlist?

Dancin'.[/B]

Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), Sledgehammer (A Sabre, but so what!:D)

Sorry for being anal about the Sabre, BUTT.......

Single PU Stingray can't get the round "sludge" of both pickups of the Sabre. Like the Neck PU of a Jazz can sound very near a P a single pickup P won't sound like 2 Pickup Jazz.
Listen to the Sabre tone in the Dazz Band's Let it Whip at :29 and 2:41 in

At one time that was my holy grail of the tone. I was told it was a Stingray. I got one but I could not get that sound.. was it EQ? Strings? Compression? I was very fortunate to meet Louis and Michael Wiley of the Dazz Band and learned it was the Sabre that produces a tone that I describe as "NUTTY SLUDGE" with both PUs.

Great tone. I would never go to far trying to compare a modern instrument to a pre-Ernie Ball. Not because I have direct knowledge of the Pre-EB MM basses (I don't really), but more because I know the passion folks have for the Pre-EB stuff.

That said, I wonder if a big chunk of the tone difference can be made up in a HH vs H Stingray? I have an HH and I'll tell you, I can absolutely get a "deeper, thicker" sound than you can get in a single H Ray - simply because of the neck pickup. Now the folks who love single H Rays will tell you that even though you can get a deeper tone with a HH Ray, you lose a bit of the classic single H sound when you go HH.

Schism by Tool. Im sure I read that JC only ever used a Stingray on 46 & 2 and Schism.

I think I remember reading that JC started out recording sessions for Aenima on a musicman, but quickly switched to a Wal he borrowed from a friend then, liking it so much, immediately ordered one for himself. Anyways, wiki says he used a stingray on forty six & 2 and H. On Lateralus he was exclusively Wal (his main one, plus the lined fretless at some parts). Is wiki right? Who knows... I remember reading somewhere also that he used a stingray live for prison sex, but i've never seen him use anything other than wal.

On the RATM front, I think most of the first record has timmy c on a musicman...

I think most of the cure's earliest stuff featured a stingray. In the video for 'a forest' simon gallup is playing a black on black stinger. His lines may not be flash, but they're memorable.

actually he's playing a p in the video for A Forest, but he used a stingray a lot in later years- eg. "swimming the same deep water as you" "fascination street" and "a thousand hours".

some others;
The House of love- shine on , Israel
Simple Minds- all the things she said (probably a Sabre, as John Giblin was playing one in the video for Alive & kicking)

BOC on the top of the list! You are doing well my friend. More Cowbell! Also a quick apology to all about mentioning Ebay thing. A definate newbie mistake. Please forgive past postings. i will post some pictures of my SNL More Cowbell Bass soon! (this relic has not seen the light of day for a few years).
MIC NUGGETTE

Though I've normally seen Bernard Edwards on youtube with a Stingray. Didn't he tell a young Marcus Miller when queried about his BC Rich Eagle that he actually records with his trusty old P-Bass (I have seen him play Everybody Dance with P-Bass on youtube.

George Duke's Silly Fightin' played by Louis Johnson has a great Bassline, I think it's a 'Ray but it may have been a Yamah BB.

Ok here's what I have. I may have missed some good tracks but I'll go back and scrub the thread;

Burnin' for You - BOC
The Game - Disturbed
Bleed it Out - Linkin Park
Just a Girl - No Doubt (Still have it in... am I wrong?)
Another one bites the dust - Queen
Red Flag - Billy Talent
Red Rain - Peter Gabriel
Killing in the Name - Rage Against the Machine
I'm Gonna Tear your Playhouse Down - Paul Young
Get On the Floor - Michael Jackson
The Dark Eternal Night - Dream Theater
Suggestion - Fugazi
Aeroplane - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Fame - David Bowie

Two question are; are all these confirmed and..

What am I missing?

Paul S. Denman and his Ray on "Paradise" by Sade.

Check it here:

My understanding, like chanson's, was that Aeroplane was the only Stingray on One Hot Minute, the rest was Alembic.

Alright I'll take that as confirmation. Aeroplane it is. I made a bunch of other adjustments as well. Note that you can see the "current" list at the very first post for this thread. I'm constantly updating that first post to keep it up to date.

Pretty much anything Teena Marie, Mary Jane Girls, and live Rick James. Now sometimes rick used the rickenbacker, but he had a bassist behind him and on many recordings using the stingray.

Charles Glen played a Sabre with Teena Marie, Alen McGuire played Stingray with Teena Marie and Oscar Alston Played most of Rick james and Mary Jane girls stuff on Alembic.
