The whole "One Hot Minute" album was done on a Stingray.

There most certainly was an Alembic involved in the recording of most songs on OHM, though no one can really seem to confirm if some songs were done with another bass. The one on aeroplane sounds very close to a StingRay though, so I would guess it is one.

To the OP: Dear God, Avenged Sevenfold. Very clear StingRay tone.
I probably forgot like 10000 others :p.

Anything by Fugazi (Joe Lally)
Except for the very early stuff and some tracks here and there, he mainly recorded with a Jazz bass. "Waiting Room" is fine for the list though.

at the drive in/mars volta

anything recorded
So wrong. Only the last ATDI was a Stingray, the rest was a Precision. I can't think of any Mars Volta that has a Musicman bass in it. The suggestion for Quarantined by ATDI is excellent though.

Some suggestions:
The Breeders - Cannonball
Lagwagon - May 16

Im sure Dani California and Hard To Concentrate by RHCP is a Stingray as well.

he used a pre CBS jazz on most of Stadium arcadium...also on one hot minute most of the recorded bass was an Alembic Epic 5 string...and a WAL on Blood sugar sex magic.

Flea always loved the look of stingrays (especially black and maple ones) but wasn't a big fan of the sound in the studio.

Even most of his early recordings were either a 73-75 Pbass, a or spector NS2.

But I I have no idea what he used on Mother's Milk...

Most of this is taken from Bass Player Magazine interviews, a VHS tape i used to have of the making of Blood sugar" and other assorted video clips from Youtube and interviews...

Alright I'll take that as confirmation. Aeroplane it is. I made a bunch of other adjustments as well. Note that you can see the "current" list at the very first post for this thread. I'm constantly updating that first post to keep it up to date.

ok I can't disprove that he used a MM on Aeroplane...

yeah that pretty much right. heres what flea used on every album, you can hear it, sometimes more obviously than others.

red hot chili peppers - he used both a pbass and a musicman cutlass I (in old videos you can see it covered in green and pink tape.)

freaky styley - entirely done with the cutlass, studio videos from back in the day with george clinton confirms this. listen to the cover of sly stones "if you want me to stay", the music man tone is painfully obvious.

uplift mofo party plan and mother's milk - a musicman and the spector ns. listen to good time boys on mothers milk, the one bass fill where the rest of the band drops out before the vocal is obviously a jazz bassish tone, and the spector he was using at the time had two jazz pickups.

blood sugar sex magic - wal mach II and a stingray 5 on "funky monks" and "righteous and the wicked", the funky monks dvd confirms that.

one hot minute - musicman, alembic epic, and a sigma acoustic

californication - all modulus

by the way - flea bass, his pink jazz bass, and a fretless music man on "i could die for you" i read that in the uk bass guitar.

stadium arcadium is a couple of jazz basses.

all the volta stuff is recorded with either a pbass or a jazz bass. and in whichever forms they come in (juan currently uses a darryl jones lakland, but its still a jazz bass)

flea used a pbass on deloused because omar didnt want him to use the active, more "modern" sounding equipment.

and the widow is recorded on juan's passive fretless pbass

See, for the thread (if it were MY "ultimage StingRay list", but it's not...) I'd want it limited to things that are unequivocally a StingRay, and if there's reasonable conjecture, leave it off.

And here's the thing. Unless we have some sort of information from the bassist on the recording, we shouldn't assume it's a 'Ray or something else. For example, if it's KNOWN to be Carol Kaye on a track recorded before about 1978, it's a P bass with Fender 850 flats and a pick. That's becasue that's what she used. But after that (I don't know the year for sure) she used a Gibson Ripper, a Music Man StingRay, a Strings 'n' Things P/J, a Fender P Bass Lyte, an Aria, and an Ibanez. Or if it's a track we KNOW for sure that Joe Osborn recorded before 2000, it's a 1961 Jazz Bass with LaBella flats.

But with most artits who use or used StingRays, they also used other basses over the course of years. Without reliable referernce from the bassist or the producer, I wouldn't bet on any of them.

I have my own list of conjecture- I think Carl Radle's playing a StingRay on "Wonderful Tonight", and that it's Boz Burell's fretless 'Ray on "Feel Like Makin' Love", and that John Deacon played a 'Ray on "Another One Bites The Dust". But I don't know it well enough to recommend those as "ultimate StingRay playlist" fodder.

I agree with this actually. I've been scrubbing as we go but am a few days behind. This weekend, things that aren't confirmed will have to drop. :(

How can you CONFIRM something like this without having been in the studio when the tack was recorded or without some kind of video footage of the track being recorded? Certain artists talk about what their prefered gear is in interviews, but who is to say they didn't use something different for a given track?

Saying that it sounds like a musicman doesn't seem like much of a confirmation.

H. by Tool is done on a Stingray, and I think it sounds awesome; some parts of that song really let the bass shine through (when it's not distorted like in the beginning).

I did find an old video of Tom Commerford (sp?) playing a 'Ray but I forget what song it was, and what year. Was pretty old though, as stated.

Within reason. What I'll have to drop is the stuff that's highly debated or controversial. The key is "reasonably" sure. The ones that are hotly contested are probably best to avoid. Problem is; I haven't heard a "It's definitely a Music Man" Flea song yet. I mean, cripes I know he played them forever but he's hard to pin down on any one song.

Benjamin Orr did play a Stingray, but he used his Rickenbacker on "Just What I Needed"

When I spoke to Greg Hawkes he confirmed that Benjamin used that bass for most of the first Cars album.
