Ultimate Rickenbacker Playlist?

I believe Battery (and the rest of Master of Puppets!) was Cliff's Aria bass. Ride The Lightning and Kill 'Em All are most definitely his rick, I remember him saying in an interview sometime before the release of MoP that the Rick "needed work", which is I am assuming is why he was never seen playing a Rick after RTL was released. Maybe a better Metallica choice would be Metal Militia (rick with flats)?

Oh and uh.. something to add to the list would be "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand. I dunno, I just remember seeing that "really weird guitar" years ago on MTV.

I'm going to sub in "Hit the Lights". Debut song on debut album. What could be more fitting?

Great call on "Take me out".

The picture of Geddy recording "Permanent Waves" when I bought it back in the day had him holding a JAZZ. It was my first realization that it maybe wasn't a RIC. I would say you gotta get Joey DeMaio from Manowar in there from the "Battle Hymns" LP '82. Brutal Ric tones...check out bass solo in "Fast Taker" or the intro to "Dark Avenger" or "William's Tale" (William Tell Overture on bass alone). Also Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash on "Argus" has a killer Ric tone.

I went with Fast Taker. I think that's early enough that it's "pre-mod". The trick with DeMaio (and Cliff Burton for that matter) is that I want to get a clean, no-mod sound. Both (especially DeMaio) modified their Ricks pretty heavily after a while. I think I went early enough with both that I got in front of that.

Let me add, that tossing in Sir Paul is a little off the mark for most Ric users. He used an "S" series, which in my opinion sounds quite different.

Sure, the lack of binding on the body and the fretboard dot markers instead of the triangle inlays must play a huge difference in terms of sound :)

Roger Waters Rickenbacker was also an S series, just like the one played by Chris Squire, Peter Quaife (The Kinks in You Really Got Me), John Entwistle (Anyway Anyhow Anywhere), Donovan and the Bee Gees

Here's my contribution;

Green Machine - Kyuss

BTW, MAJOR props for having Dragonaut on there!

Even though Scott Reeder was featured in the video for the song "Green Machine", the album was actually recorded with Nick Oliveri, and I believe he always used a P-bass with Kyuss.

Maybe Scott used the Rickenbacker on "Welcome to Sky Valley", though. If that's the case I would nominate "Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop" for a track on the Rick playlist. But he could have been recording with the Ibanez ATK by then...not sure.

I believe you are Invalid Link Removed.

That was when James' arm was still healing and John Marshall was subbing in on rhythm guitar for them. As you can see, Cliff is playing his Rickenbacker. Presumably it got fixed, at least to the point of being functional.

Rickenbackers sound completely different without body binding and with dot inlays instead of triangle ones. Everyone knows that. ;)

As for a Rickenbacker playlist.... um...

"The Call of Ktulu" -Metallica
"Seek and Destroy" -Metallica
"For Whom the Bell Tolls" -Metallica

"Isa" -Enslaved
Anything from Enslaved's Below the Lights

"As Rome Burns" -Primordial
"Empire Falls" -Primordial

"Burning Angel" -Arch Enemy

"Colossus" -Borknagar

"My Generation" -The Who (I know it wasn't recorded with a Ric, but it would sound pretty awesome on one)

The entire Sgt. Pepper's album.

Since Geddy and Sir Paul are my two biggest influences AND because I love Rics so much, basically because of them, I gotta add to this.....

Rush: Cinderella Man off of "A Farewell To Kings" is a fanastic example of Geddy's Ric tone. Also anything off of "Exit...Stage Left."

Beatles: One of my favorites as far as Paul's Ric tone can be heard on With A Little Help From My Friends" from "Sgt. Pepper."

Wings: Gotta mention Silly Love Songs even though many people hate that song. Also, Letting Go and She's My Baby. I believe all 3 are off of "Wings At The Speed Of Sound."

Finally, here's a wildcard choice: A solo album of Pete Townsend's called "All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes" has a song on it I really love called Slit Skirts. It was in heavy rotation on MTV back in the early days. I think the bassist's name is Tony Franklin. His Ric tone on that song especially is awesome even though it's not that loud in the mix.

This is a great thread! Keep them coming!!!:bassist:

the playlist must reflect both the grindy roundwound sound of a Rick (Geddy / Chris Squire) and the thumpy groove of flatwounds (Paul Mc) - as far as the sounds are apart, they reflect the astounding range a Rick is capable of.

Btw. kudos to pringlw for a great thread idea, both MM and Rick
