I did this for the Music Man and it was a great thread. Here's the concept;

Lots of folks come here looking for information on different basses. What they sound like? What they're good for? Etc.

What I've found is that the best way to get educated on what a bass is all about is to listen to a bunch of tracks that used that bass. I'm looking for different genres, and also songs that show the basses range. The focus isn't so much on the brilliance of the bass player. It's more about hearing the vibe and tone of the bass.

The MM list that a pile of us created can be found at the link at the end of this note. Here's the current list for Rickenbacker. I'll keep updating it as we go. Let's hear the suggestions.

Freewill - Rush
Circumstances - Rush
Roundabout - Yes
South Side of the Sky - Yes
Recycling - Nektar
Ace of Spades - Motorhead
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - The Beatles
Sober - Tool
Starrider - Foreigner
Dragonaut - Sleep
Highway Star (studio) - Deep Purple
Arnold Layne - Pink Floyd
Dancing With The Moonlit Knight - Genesis
Green Machine - Kyuss
Hit the Lights - Metallica
Blowin' Free - Wishborn Ash
Fast Taker - Manowar
Stop this Game - Cheap Trick
Muse - Knights of Cydonia
Champagne Jam - Atlanta Rhythm Section
Take me Out - Franz Fertinand

I wouldn't ordinarily put 2 songs in for any one artist, but if Geddy Lee & Chris Squire don't earn two songs in a Rickenbacker thread... well something just wouldn't be right.

Freewill is heavily debated whether it is the Jazz or the Rick, that ones a bit iffy.

I would personally choose a better song by Yes, but Roundabout really does bring the bass to the front of the mix.

Freewill's not a Jazz. Geddy switched to a J-Bass on Moving Pictures not Spirit of the Radio. Besides... have you heard the song? It's got Rick written all over it.

Think J-Bass - think Tom Sawyer.

Listen to the first Foreigner record and the tune is called Star Rider.
the first couple Starcastle records are all Ric...
for some modern tones, find bands called Knight Area and Presto Ballet.

I have LOTS of Ric songs!!!

I record with mine all the time...

The picture of Geddy recording "Permanent Waves" when I bought it back in the day had him holding a JAZZ. It was my first realization that it maybe wasn't a RIC. I would say you gotta get Joey DeMaio from Manowar in there from the "Battle Hymns" LP '82. Brutal Ric tones...check out bass solo in "Fast Taker" or the intro to "Dark Avenger" or "William's Tale" (William Tell Overture on bass alone). Also Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash on "Argus" has a killer Ric tone.
