Ultimate Rickenbacker Playlist?

yeah, but that picture could have been taken after master of puppets was recorded! it sure as hell looks like the master of puppets tour they are playing at in that pic.so yeah,he probably got it back eventually, but i still don't think that he recorded the whole master of puppets with it;ever notice his bass stands out more in kill em' all? he definatly use the rick for that album, you can tell.but master of puppets his bass is buried,so he had to use his aria for that.the only song i heard he actually used the rick on was "the thing that should not be"
but that was the only one

Yeah it seems he used the Rick for Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning, and the Aria SB for Master of Puppets. But the fact that he used an Aria on Master of Puppets has no bearing on whether it was 'buried' or not. The bass just wasn't mixed very prominently. It would have been the same if it was a Rick. You can hear it if the bass is turned up (check all the Youtube clips nowadays)...Same with Jason on ...AJFA. It's not that his bass (a Steinberger according to the ...AJFA bass tab book) was somehow unable to record a decent sound on a recording, it was just turned down! I think Jason's bass tone is pretty wicked on ...AJFA.

As for the live shots with the Cliff, he used Aria 95% most of the time on the MoP tour, but would occasionally bust out the Rick for The Thing That Should Not Be...On live recordings, you can hear the Aria just fine. There are some nice soundboard recordings out there.

If someone makes an absolute statement like this:

never seen playing a Rick after RTL was released

Then a challenge to that statement should be expected, as any exception disproves an absolute.

I am well aware that Cliff used an Aria for the recording of the Master of Puppets album, and used his Rickenbacker for "The Thing That Should Not Be" on the tour for that album, as that song is in a different tuning.

And I think he's buried mostly because of the production. He doesn't stand out that much on Ride the Lightning either, but on that album he's using the Rickenbacker.

Anyway, IMHO, both RtL and MoP would have sounded better with the bass jacked up to levels approaching that of the songs posted on youtube where the bass is turned way up.

I think some of this is because his Rick's neck got messed up for a while. Most likely because he stuck a big fat non-stock pickup in the neck position. With a Rick being neck through the body - that means.. broken neck and bad stability.

Technically speaking McCartney played a 4001S (US model)whereas Squire and Entwistle played the model 1999 which was the export version of the 4001S. Not sure about what model the others mentioned played.

As Imathebassman said, the 1999 was the same model as 4001S renumbered by the UK importer, namely Rose Morris

And yes, the other guys mentioned (Waters, Gibb, Quaife, Donovan) owned a 1999
