They just let me know this, even though I was able to edit them whenever before today. I could edit them a month later before.
Well that's too bad, as it was the only perk of the supporting membership I actually cared about, since I'm no longer selling any gear. I have a cognitive dysfunction and I often find typos I've made far more than 30 minutes after I've made them, but I guess I will just look like an idiot from now on. Not that I didn't always look like that, anyway
That wasn't true for supporting members, but it appears they've changed it. I confirmed this by looking up some of my earlier posts from today. Then I cancelled my support.
Sorry about that, but they need to give you something that you actually want besides simple access in order to make it worthwhile. I use an ad blocker, so that's really not important to me.

That was how I noticed this, I went to correct a minor typo. That’s the problem with predictive auto correct. Sometimes it makeS you look like an idiot, and you have to correct the correction.
Bad choice to implement the 30 minute rule. There are many very good reasons why people need to edit their posts long afterward. I won’t be posting much until/unless this changes (please, hold down the applause).
It's been explained a few times by now. It turns out several members were going back and changing/deleting things that completely revised the point of their posts.... which caused confusion. Also, people were posting naughty things and editing them before they got caught... or something like that.
I still think this is the best run forum I've ever come across. But this new policy is not my favorite.

Ugh. Not at all in favor of this policy change. I have learning disabilities including dyslexia, and I am fully aware that I constantly make lots and lots of typos, which I rely on the ability to go back and correct. I feel like this new policy makes TalkBass a less friendly community from a neurodiversity perspective. Some people are just better than others at perfectly expressing their thoughts into writing; others of us it's more of an editorial process that takes a few tries. It's just how our brains are wired, and (speaking purely for myself) there isn't any malicious intent whatsoever.
Probably what I will have to start doing is composing, spell check, and proofreading in Word, then copy & paste it to TalkBass, which is annoying and makes me less likely to participate.

i committed to that on day one --- so that part won't be much different for me.
but being able to correct posts to actually conform to 'my intent' is essential for accuracy in a discussion, or when giving advice based on experience. i'm with you on the benefits of supporting members = the ability to correct a post is one of the best reasons to support!
maybe we could appeal to the powers-that-be.
I never claimed it wasn't 60 minutes? And you address none of the concerns I raised.
(edit) Or did you hit "quote" on the wrong post by accident, and you meant to reply to someone else? I do that sort of thing all the time; no worries. Another reason why it's great to have an Edit feature.

I believe preventing users from deleting their own posts might also contravene some laws in Europe and California. Not a lawyer and not suggesting we have a legal debate on the forum. Just saying that it’s something the powers that be might have not considered.

What thought is going to become so much more revelatory or clear if you can just go back 1:01 hours later and clarify that you meant "their" instead of "there."
It's the internet. And half of us are nuts anyway!
If you're worried that you aren't being clear, write a text message to yourself. When you've changed it to your liking, copy and paste to the talkbass thread.

Maybe if enough supporters withhold support mgt might rethink this, or at least liberalize it for supporting members. Sorry to keep bringing this up, but many of us do feel strongly. It’s not that mgt doesn’t have the right to make the decision, it’s that it doesn’t make the decision right for the good of the forum. I’m almost done now.

For me it's not been so much about typos. It's about when you make a post, then someone misunderstands what you said and starts a ball rolling where there are suddenly ten pages of people giving you advice about something you never asked. Yes, you can make a followup post to clarify but nobody reads the full thread so the bad advice continues anyway. The only way to stop the snowball effect is to edit the original post.
I started off here as a supporting member because I had some gear I wanted to sell. Then shipping got expensive and I decided my days of shipping gear were over, so I let my membership lapse. The very first thing I noticed was the edit button disappearing. Since I value clarity and since the pile-ons of people who get mentally confused are incredibly annoying to me, I renewed my support in order to have that option.
I'm not sure why this is a big deal. Supporting members are spending money to support the site; by definition they are not trolls, and not inclined to do things in a deliberate fashion to make things less clear. We want the ability to make things more clear, which would save the staff time and effort.
But, as you can see, that's not happening and therefore I'm voting with my wallet, since I can. Everyone else can do what they want

The privilege to sell here was a primary motivation. I turned off the ad blocker for my browser also.

Now my support status will be allowed to lapse.
My posting will curtail.
We are being punished for a few abusers, but the abusers are likely still allowed to post.
