If had not witnessed this I would never have believed it. My 3 year old son was playing outside yesterday on the far side of our yard. Suddenly our German Shepherd, Lola, runs over to him, knocks him down and pulled his shoe off and appeared to be biting at his feet. I run over to where they are ready to kill the dog, but noticed that he had stepped in Fire ants and they were covering his feet. Lola acted so quickly and began licking them off so fast that my son didn't get one bite for the ants. She has always been an incredibly gentle and protective of the family so I couldn't imagine why she had knocked him down, but now I'm grateful that she did. I have never had a dog as incredible as Lola. I have no idea how she knew he was in danger, it was really amazing.
