Unchain My Heart, Cocker - Slap only in intro??

Am I hearing the Coker version of Unchain My Heart right? Seems to me the track is slap all through?

Touring with Cocker, Oneida James just slapped the intro. But here it's slap all through: Joe cocker - Unchain My Heart (T.M. Stevens???)

What do you guys do with this song? My slap isn't up to it... yet.... could be the reason to take it on.

If you want to copy the track exactly, you slap all the way.

To be honest, the slap starts to sound monotonous. If its an option, would do it only on the intro or maybe play an alternate groove.

Ask yourself
How would Duck Dunn play this?
Hutch Hutchinson?
James Jamerson?
Pino Palladiino?
etc.

Don't want to copy per se; I do like to nail a song first, thought, and then go from there. I think it'll wind up being slap for intro and a bit of emphasis here and there, and if I can hone my slap technique en route, so much the better!

Completely agree in re Ray Charles!! We've been asked to do the Cocker to back up a pal... who originally wanted to do the Johnny Winter version. Bleugh. (IMHO, of course.) Once this is done, it's the RC version for our own fun.
Good thought about the new strings. That could be what made it pop. Well, THAT's not going to happen! ; )

Yeah, blast from the past incarnate! The funny thing is that the guy who wants to sing this looks just like Joe. Channeling the vibe. I don't think I'll slap it, but I'm using it as a vehicle to get my slapping up a level.
