Uncle GAS Needs You: Help Design an All Tube Amp!!!

How bout naming it something simple like the "TB-300" a tribute to those who inspired its design. Chances are there's something out there already called that though. Plus its probably not an artsy fartsy enough name like "Sunset Tone" or some of the others suggested.

This thread sorta makes me think of that episode of The Simpsons where Homer gets to design a car. For those who haven't seen it, the "every feature Homer could think of" car ends up costing a rediculous amount to produce and the end product is one nobody would want or could afford to buy. I'm not saying the same is the case with this amp, but just that any product going to market that includes all (or nearly) all the features that everybody would want usually parallels the Simpsons situation; terribly expensive, combersomely large and/or heavy, difficult to diagnose and repair problems, overly complicated to dial in for a huge number of musicians, and plenty of other problems.

That said, I think it's cool that Mr. Jackson has asked for and received so much support and direction from the members of this forum.

This doens't really apply in this situation cause it's not as extreme as you imply. The V8 has most of the stuff in this amp and is heavy as hell and to alot of players it's the holy grail regardless. The SA200 and Aguilar stuff is expensive as hell but you know how well they're doing. :D

I suppose so you're right. Even so, I'm just saying that attempting to incorporate everybody's suggestions and "wants" for any product can often lead to a product that doesn't live up to all those expectations.

Funny you should be talking about this because right now I'm supposed to be writing a feasibility report on a mobile phone aimed at the medical community for college Im actually studying product design.

There are loads of methods for making a product design specification. Including a matrix analysis where by you write down a matrix containing different manufacturers and models of similar products on one side and along the top you write down a bunch of features. Then simply tick what models have what features for easy comparison of competitors.

Another is demands and wishes list in which you write down a bunch of features such (in this case) weight, power, effects loops, etc. everything from the ridiculous to the mandatory and mark them as a demand or a wish. Like 300 watt would be a demand but weighing less than 10lbs would be a wish. Something that might seem to be a wish could on further investigation become a demand.(which I think is what this thread is loosely simulating)

Anyways there are other tools as well but they are all very useful methods for getting a good outline of what the product should contain on paper. Anyways enough boring you with my college babble back to writing this god damn report

Now that would be something i'd never do. I'm not confident enough to mess with my tubes just for tone, but if that becomes a feature, can i drive to freetmont and have you do it for me for an A/B through your NV215? :p hehe

Perhaps I could open a tube selection consultation service? :D

Different tonal possibilities.

Of course, I've never tried this before (though my Mesa Boogie Strategy 400 allows me to combine EL34's with 6L6's).

Tom.

Speak'n of. I don't suppose you (or anyone) know of a bottle converter that's made to adapt an octal preamp tube (say 6sn7) to a 9 pin. Ive' heard GT made one to go the other way at one point, but apparently it was less than successful.

You guys talking the 6s tubes got me looking into them enough to buy some but not sufficiently to have read enough beforehand to know that was not an option for the Uni. The manual said any dual triode preamp tube but left out the 9 pin part. I wasn't aware the octal preamps had the same octal power tube base. All new ground for me.

But I got some drivers and that's a start. Beep Beep m Beep Beep Yeh!

Why not a NO rackspace... :D the smallest bass rig I know of. 600watt Focus SA, and True-Voice preamp... all fits in the cool little bag that AI sends with the Focus.. and it sounds great!!

Yea, well we do that one to :D

I actually am using 2 6SN7's for the Tube front in on the True-Voice Studio Tube head with KT90's. The Front end of the Studio Head is setup like the Rackmount True-Voice. I will have them at Winter NAMM for anyone interested in checking them out.

 Gah! That is just what I needed, yet another awesome tube head to lust after! :p

I have the True Voice table top unit, and I am sure that whatever Brian comes up with is going to be great. I look forward to the results (and photos!) from Winter NAMM!
