Underrated Bassists

Colin Hodgkinson (dont have the Back Door album? GET IT NOW)

I just can't see Waters or McKagan qualifying as "underrated". As I know it, "underrated" means that they don't get the credit they deserve for the talent they have.

Waters may or may not be a good bassist. But the general populace (not bass geeks) thinks he played all of the tricky PF basslines, which he did not. Therefore he is already getting credit above and beyond what he's actually done. Yeah he might still be a good bassist, or even a great bassist, but hardly "underrated" when he is, um, very highly rated for the PF stuff. If anything he needs to catch up to the "rating" he gets credit for.

And Duff...I would bet if you asked almost any (non-bass-geek) fan of the hair metal era who the best bassist of the genre is, they're probably going to say Duff. Even among those who didn't like GnR his bass playing was very, very well regarded, and deservedly so in my opinion. So how can he be "underrated" when he's already considered #1? THAT'S THE TOP RATING

Also, they both have Fender Signature Series basses! Dave Gilmour is an underrated bassist. :smug:

A few:
I will say Victor Bailey, i dont think he gets enough buzz around him for whatever reason, just listen to his solo albums , he really knows his bass.

John Giblin, amazing unsung fretless bassist from Britian, check out his playing with Brand X (phil collins was on drums).

Rick savage from def leppard, awesome rock groove, hairspray god and all round top bloke you coan go for a pint with and talk about footy (not that i know anything about sports in gebneral) :p

Louis Johnson, just amazing funkster, yea anyone can slap mindlesly to oblivion but can they groove? Probably not....

Paul Jackson, i dare you to go and listen to the 1970's headhunter live gigs and not be blown away by pauls killer grooves and silky soul feeling towards the deep sonic dimensions.....im getting all hippy now better chime out...

I should have loved you was the one an only shocka zulu himself T.M. Stevens. I like that T.M. Stevens better than the new one. When I see him I don't know what to look at or what to like. He needs to slow down and bring back the funk at a slower pace. But hey, he's where he is and I am where I am LOL!!!

Dan Briggs - BTBAM

I've seen them live 4 times over the last few years, always an amazing show. He uses a really old Sunn 300T and his tone is superb. Really an amazing player, youtube a song called Viridian to hear some of his work...
