Underrated glam bands

Big fan of some of the great guitar work of some of the 80's, 90's hairbands. WhiteLion, WhiteSnake (the W bands as Dee Snyder calls them), Extreme, and many others. The formula otherwise was awful; effeminate volcalist, what bass(?), drummer hiding behind a 40 piece kit and very shallow lyrics.

SPARKS!!!!!!!

I don't know how popular they still are in Britain, but they are virtually unknown in the US (despite being from here). They might not strictly be glam in the sense of Ziggy-era Bowie, T. Rex or the NY Dolls, but they always had that aesthetic.

Vinnie Vincent Invasion.

Yeah it's pure shred wankery, but I still think it's pretty cool. The guy could play and sure could write some great rock, pop (and supposedly country) songs. Wolff Marshall broke down a lot of his songs and Vinnie used some creative modes and scales in his playing to create something prety unique. Of course, the average music fan just hears fast playing. ;)

I agree for the most part, but lyrics aimed at your typical 13-18 year old today (and pre 80's) are no better. See Nickelback. And yes, the bass suffered in that era. Still, I'd go back to it over the lack of or generally terrible guitar solos written today.

Frankly, I'm disappointed that no one has mentioned Spinal Tap. Real or imagined, they've gotta be somewhere up in the top five, as they epitomized every stereotypical cliche of glam rock or otherwise of the last 50+ years. 'Course, they couldn't keep a drummer ...but then how could anyone, what with all that spontaneous combustion going on.

In any event, they've got my vote...

I love this clip
. :D

p.s. please, don't take me too seriously at the moment ....though, it's never as funny when ya gotta explain the humor.

green goo left on the drum throne

How many bands are really fabricated like Spinal Tap?

I love The Sweet, T-Rex, Bowie and Mott the Hoople alot but my fave (tho little known in the U.S.) glam band is Slade - Their bassist, Jimmy Lea was a brilliant player.

I agree. I'm huge Hoople' fan from the early days. Still the best version of "All the young dudes" ever put on vinyl. Ian Hunter is brilliant. Overrend Watts...well he fit in the band is about all I can say for him.

+1 to everything. Their last two albums and Hunter's self-titled solo album is one of the finest "periods" for a music group IMHO.

I'm bumping this zombie thread because I just purchased Sweet's "On The Record" album and it's pure awesome. I haven't been this won over by an album in far too long. It's what I'd imagine cocaine would sound like if it were to make an album.

Here's a video clip of them "performing" Lost Angels. Steve Priest has a Rick I'd love to have.

Slade, T-Rex, and The Sweet were terrific glam bands. I got see The Sweet in concert back in the 70s and they were a great live band.

The Alice Cooper Band actually started out as one of the original glam bands and had some of the best musicians around and became immensely popular. Kiss then became the next glam band to have huge popularity.

The Arrows (the original I Love Rock & Roll) was a band comprised of American and British players.
