So, are you trolling, not playing American music, or are ignorant of the fact that blues is in the DNA of American non-classical music, no matter how watered down or derivative it is? No blues guitar, then no rock guitar, no R’n’B(and everything that trickled down from it)guitar, and a good chunk of what would be country guitar, and the role of bass, especially electric, would be downplayed, if nonexistent. Blues may be Saturday night music, Gospel Sunday morning, but it’s all coming from the same place. The very vocabulary of our instrument can be traced back to blues, and its cousin, jazz.

Have whatever opinion you want about whatever. It's sort of odd though that you'd volunteer said opinion on a thread specifically dedicated to those of use who like the blues. That seems a bit like trolling...

You don't like blues or EDM, and you have some hot takes about BB King, and you think those of us who like it and like to play are lesser musicians. Got it!

I never said anything about you or any of your fellow blues travelers. If you enjoy playing blues, more power to you. As Judge Smails said in Caddyshack: "The world needs ditch diggers too." Someone has to back up all those blues guitarists who "don't do chords." I'm glad you've got it covered.

My comment was based on personal experience where I live. Blues is the big thing and everyone is playing it. 98% can't play anything else.

I love electronic music. But EDM has become so pedestrian, with all those Fruity Loops (I mean FL Studio) producers making variations on the same beat. It's boring. Like most of the blues. That's my opinion.

I didn't realize that dissenting opinions weren't tolerated on blues threads. I'll remember that.

Basically, all of rock n roll, and everything that's evolved from that, evolved from the blues.
So.
Hardly an over-rated genre, imo.

And we evolved from primordial ooze. That doesn't mean one has to embrace it.

There's nothing wrong with having an opinion, but when you run into a thread and call the entire genre and it's standouts "overrated", I see that as trolling.

I'm just commenting based on my experience. I've played in blues bands on bass and keyboards. I base my comments on what a limited genre it is. The only people who seemed to truly enjoy it were the lead guitarists and habitual drunks in the audience. Before you snap at me, I've also had the experience being in the audience or running sound.

Actually, I did have one great experience backing a local blues guy. Name of Norm Nardini (a Pittsburgh icon). I was asked to back him up (along with his regular drummer). I didn't know any of his tunes and had no charts to fall back on). He was a great entertainer and didn't waste time on lots of poopy blues guitar solos. I remember that I didn't make one mistake the entire night, although that's not difficult as long as you know what key the tune is in.

I enjoyed that night.

I also find three/four chord rock to be boring and most of the players that indulge in it, to be lacking. But that's just me.

However, your comments have shown me the error of my ways. While I will always think of blues and it's direct decedents as lesser music, I shall refrain from offering any criticism of anything, lest I be branded a troll.

It's not about positive or negative or absolutes, it's about answering/commenting on the thread topic.

This thread is about "Underrated/under appreciated blues artists" , not "What's your opinion of 4 chord songs?"

That's why I suggested starting your own thread.

So you clicked on the thread, made the effort to post your hot take, called an entire genre Of music overrated.

Yet you never bothered to answer the question I posed.

maybe start your own thread with a poll “do you think songs that use 4 chords are overrated and simple?”

Or “do you think Blues and everything that came after is lesser music?”

Or “are the only people who enjoy the blues habitual drunks?”

But since you Can’t or won’t share blues artists like the title asked, maybe move on ‍

I've heard much about Kingfish but haven't got to really check him out yet. All of 20 years old.

I saw him two years ago in Clarksdale MS at the Juke Joint Festival . He's pretty good live and hopefully will have a long career . Two other folks to mention are Johnny Clyde Copeland and Joe Louis Walker . Johnny ( RIP ) was great live and turned out a bunch of good recordings - a great guy too and always a joy to see . Joe Louis Walker is still touring and well worth checking out particularly if you can catch him with his west coast pickup band - they are really good especially , when the drummer is " Popcorn " who used to play with the O'Jays at one time . He plays a small cocktail set and lives up to his nickname with a thunderous snare sound ! Kelly
