Unexpected NBD: Squier Classic Vibe 60's Precision Bass

I went to the guitar shop near my house today to pickup a new instrument cable and eyed this Squier CV P bass on the wall. I've been looking at these basses for awhile and have been wanting to add a P bass to the lineup. The manager said he'd make me a deal and dropped the price from $379 to $319. I couldn't pass it up. A quick text to my wife to make sure she wouldn't divorce me and the bass was mine!

Other than the horrible tortoise shell pickguard, I've been quite impressed with this bass. I'm debating throwing some flats on it but will probably play the rounds it came with for awhile. This will at least get me by for a time until my custom Kiesel/Carvin bass is finished.

That is a good deal and a great looking bass, congrats!
I've always liked the Fiesta Red, tort, rosewood combo but to each their own. Vintage pearloid or mint would look great too.

I'm definitely leaning more towards keeping the roundwound strings on this bass, but I might have to just buy a second to put flats on...

Good price, for sure, especially since it looks like the CV Jazz basses are being phased out, maybe the P basses will follow.

Just threw a set of medium-light Chromes on my Matt Freeman Sig PB. Marriage made in heaven AFAIC.

Funny thing…I don't like chromes on anything else I own.

I put an EMG Geezer Butler pickup in mine and couldn't be happier. Not that the stock one was bad, I just wanted something more and they delivered. Also have Ernie Ball Cobalt flats on it right now, and while they sound great I miss rounds. DM Blue Steels have been working great on my Jack Casady and Rick, so I may
toss a set on my Pbass in the not too distant future.

Oh yeah and that's a nice looking bass you got! I have a sonic blue and put a mint guard on it, but I like the tort on yours. I think it looks outstanding!

Go with an Aguilar AG-4P-60. Great "classic - only better" PBass tone - and reasonably priced.

Got one. Really like it.

Does anyone know if any standard 13 screw P bass pickguard will fit the Squier?

I ordered my mint from china for about 20 bucks and it fit like a charm. And yes 13 holes, no drilling. Had to sand the opening for the pickup a bit because it was hanging up but that was no big deal.

As for replacement pickups, you might really like Carvin's P-bass pickups. I played a PB4 for several weeks and it sounded amazing!

I just put a Dimarzio split P in one of mine. It sings amazing, rich, full, dynamic. And it looks cooler than a normal pickup.

If you sell that when you get the carbon, I call dibs!!!

The stock pickup was not bad, but I enjoyed the Lollar I put in mine:

I played it for a year before giving another TB'er a super deal on a killer P. This was my first Squire and the bass that convinced me that basswood can have excellent tone. I remember liking the neck contour but like yours, it had too much clear coat on the back of the neck. A few minutes with one of the green scotch brite pads will smooth it to your liking. Enjoy your new bass!

Nice score!! I picked up mine for the same sweet deal. Mine had been hanging on their wall for about a year. Something about that fiesta red must turn most people off. Im glad I got it and no one else did (insert evil laugh)

Where did you get that pickguard? And whats it called? I'm thinking I may like that on my Sonic blue also!
