Unintended Good

Years ago, I was buying Fender products just because I had the plug through my former employer (I went nuts when the Squier CV series came out). Thinking back, I was like an old Cat hoarding lady, except I had a brood of unplayed instruments.
Had a rough period between now and then, matured a bit, and am pretty content with the 3 basses I have. Even caught myself looking at a tempting ad, thinking “dude, you already have one.”

I've been a motorcycle guy many times in my life, in fact, that was my main transportation in high school.
My last one was a 1100cc Kawa cruiser that was destroyed in a fire.
My MC days are in the past, but they still catch my eye on the street.

I just retired 38 days ago from my job, and years ago from road trip type bands.
So you would think I'm through buying basses, but I'm not.
I mostly buy cheap or rescue basses to mod since I don't gig anymore,
and I haven't even done that in a while.

057912

After having gone on a buying binge in the last few years (7 basses, 4 cabinets and 2 heads) my GAS has totally abated. I feel like I've far exceeded my needs and there seems to be nothing new out there that tickles my fancy. Even my long quest to find the perfect string seems to be over.

Seems like a healthy perspective, Doc. Enjoy what you have. I've done a lot of buying recently. Some will stay. Some won't. It's about time for a sell down myself. I broke all of my own rules (mainly one-in-one-out). But it's not too late to go back to a number of basses and amps that makes more sense. Like you, I got a fretless. That'll keep my ears busy for a while by itself.

I believe shopping or gassing is an acquiered habit, because its fun to shop & buy New things! we do it when were bored or sad/depressed, we get that shot of dopamine and AHhhhh! I think its a good thing to not always indulge your impulses, it reminds me of that old saying,"starve the body feed the soul". be grateful, that you have an abundant collection, and are blessed with gifted kids! be glad that its because of better things not because you're forced to do so!

Shopping as a leisure activity for its' own sake ( as opposed to being a response to a specific want or need that arises in and of itself), is a problem for us as a society. I am completely guilty of doing it far too often, but am fully aware that shopper's high is not a good reason to buy.

My kid is headed down to Florida after all, even though I wish they had given her more money. That means I can visit Bass Central once or twice a year. Too bad I won’t have money for a Dingwall NG3.

That’s wonderful news.
If she needs anything while she is here let me know in a pm.
I don’t remember where she was going but I’d be more than happy to help her if she ever needs it.
And I’m sure I’ll see you at Bass Central. Our recently purchased home is about 10 mins away so I’m even closer now. Dangerously close!!

Meh, I don't know. I kind of agree with the part about losing the desire to go to stores of any kind. My wife and I stopped physically shopping for groceries and started ordering everything for home delivery. We didn't step foot in a real store for literally 3 months. Yesterday was my first day actually physically going to a grocery store. On the one hand it was very nice to not have to deal with society when everyone was clearly at their worst, so I call that a success. On the other hand, there was a lot of stuff we simply couldn't get that I enjoy having on hand so the grocery bill was pretty hefty yesterday as I restocked the pantry with "my" typical items.

As for "GAS", I think I'm at a point where I've reached the reality that I really don't need 75% of what I have so it's just me filling my desires, and none of that has to be done any time soon. I keep my eyes open for a small list of certain things that would have to be incredible deals for the time being, but outside of that I'm just not shopping for gear right now. One of these days I'm gonna put together that all BOSS pedal board that I want to build, but I really don't need it at all so it's not a priority.

Life goes on, right? Live it the way you need to live it.

I think many people struggle with GAS because we tend to spend our free time shopping. We go to GC on Saturday afternoons because we are bored, we browse the TalkBass classifieds or Craigslist or Reverb, we read posts on TalkBass or watch videos on youtube about gear. I have found that my GAS is proportional to the amount of time I spend looking at gear-related content. If I'm reading or practicing or doing yard work, I spend less time thinking about what I might buy to get that sound in my head. If I'm just playing my bass, I find that I can usually get the sound with the (admittedly, ample supply of) gear I already own. I like both the basses I own, I have all the pedals I need to get the sounds I want, I have an adequately loud and good-sounding amp rig.

@Dr. Cheese, do yo have an Endela yet? That’s an itch that you can scratch for less than
$90.

At this point, I’m well scratched, if you know what I mean. Lol.
Peace, Brother.

I bought a Civvi Exarch, a Benchmade Mini Bugout, and a Hogue Deka in May. That will have to hold me for a while.

Do you take your basses into stores to mess around with amps?
Carvin LB-20 2.JPG Alembic Epic-2.JPG Yes - yes I do. As you can see - I pretty much have to... I especially like taking my Alembic Epic into Sam Ash. So far, the quickest I've ever been able to get it from the front "check-your-instrument-in" counter back to the amps, is 18 minutes. Last time, I even had wannabe drummers running over to look at it. You'd think that nobody had ever seen one before...
