Unintended Good

I know when you respond, I'll be like DUH! Help a noob out, what is GAS?

Seems that it might be like "two-foot-itis" - which in the boating world translates to "I'll be happy once I have two foot more boat". Then you're not. But you just dropped a load of money and sold the one you liked more.
 That is a great way to describe GAS.

My home and shed are full of equipment I could never possibly use even over time. I way too many amps but I have a great collection of basses, and half of them were under $300. I have two that need some work, one badly in need of work, but other than that, I think I just bought my last bass for a long time. It's an Ibanez SR1200L I bought from the UK. Was overpriced but I wanted it anyway. Don't get me wrong-- not as expensive as most of the basses all of you buy. But still a nice bass.

Once I get my two last basses restored I'll be happy. OOPS, forgot to mention-- I'm going to look for some pedals next!

I really want to "upgrade" my 5-string. My Ibby BTB405QM is beautiful and sounds great but the neck is just too flat front to back for my comfort. Which keeps me from playing it, which keeps me from achieving any level of proficiency with a 5. There's a few at my local Music Go Round that I have my eye on (A Lakland 55-02 Skyline Deluxe, a few Schecter CV-5's and some Sterling Singray 5's), and they're open, but the risk-factor of going in is enough to keep me home. Where I could be practicing on a 5 if I had one that is comfortable...

Interesting times.

An unintended benefit of staying at home so much is that I have lost a lot of the urge to go places, especially stores, for no good reason. I almost went to GC today and Saturday, but stayed home because I don’t want or really need anything musical. If I had gone to GC, I would have probably plugged my Geddy Lee into a MarkBass of some kind and then checked for any cool used basses. I am not in the market for either, so why bother? On top of it, the coronavirus has not gone away.

At another level, I just thought about how many perfectly good basses I have let go because there was something, no better than what I had, that caught my eye at a store. In the next eight or so years, both of my kids are going to college starting this Fall. I may as well get used to walking past gear, because the party is over! If anything, when I retire, a retirement hangout back South and probably another motorcycle will come before another bass, assuming my health is good. To paraphrase a Bible verse, there is a season for everything, but my GAS season may be passing away.

I am not claiming to be over GAS, the money just won’t be there for GAS unless something really changes. Fortunately, my gear is way more than I need.
For me the virus stuff killed a lot of gas but I think some of that is just temporary. For example I normally am borderline crazy about strings. With the venues closed this is longest I’ve gone without changing strings since the 90s. I also wanted to replace my ampeg classic cabs with mesa subway cabs but since I’m not currently gigging that incentive to have something lighter has been put on hold. Pedalboard wise my board is full and I don’t think I’ll replace anything unless something breaks. Bass wise I think 3 is a good number for me. Not saying I won’t buy another one, I expect I will eventually but I’ll probably only do so with the stupilation that I sell a bass.

Seriously, I use an octave pedal, a good outboard preamp, and an envelope filter. We’ll see what happens.:D

maybe you should review your pedals? I think I need an envelope filter but I have no more room on my board...

I actually sold two basses this week.... bought car parts and a watch and still have money left over... wife says she wants crown molding... not sure if that’s a subject that can be discussed here...

I know the other one is an Alembic and very cool but that Carvin.........WOW

View attachment 3859720 View attachment 3859732 Yes - yes I do. As you can see - I pretty much have to... I especially like taking my Alembic Epic into Sam Ash. So far, the quickest I've ever been able to get it from the front "check-your-instrument-in" counter back to the amps, is 18 minutes. Last time, I even had wannabe drummers running over to look at it. You'd think that nobody had ever seen one before...

MVC-001S.JPG MVC-004S.JPG MVC-002S.JPG Thanks. That's not really a good picture of the Carvin; this is what it really looks like. It's a finish I don't think Keisel offers any more; a Lexus Pearl White kind of thing. Outside, or under stage lights? It's a real eye catcher... Why is a long story, but I currently have it strung BEAD with Roto 77 flats. It's a very nice bass... especially since I bought it, unplayed, for $360...

I must be doing something wrong. I've already bought 3 basses this year, 2 since lockdown started. You'd think I'd be over it with 12 basses and 3 combo amps but I still want a Jazz, a Ric, and an Ampeg head with a 2x12 cab and a 1x15 cab.
Then I might be over GAS. Emphasis on the *might be*. ;-)
Sounds like you are happy. Knock yourself out!:bassist:
