I mean, I hear ya. But it doesn't hurt to maybe have an added notoriety of "that guy with the weird bass" right?

Depends on the gigs you do/want to do.
It can hurt indeed as very often not you ,but the person you work for will be the intended centre of attention.

Some really fine bass playing. That first track put a lot of studio tuba players out of work.

Mike asked if I could sound like a tuba on that song, I said of course.

As of late, I've been creeping on reverb and trying to find another four string that is unique and sticks out, while still doing the job (which is obviously the most important thing.) Since at times basses tend to be a very homogeneous with the same sort of designs (the P, the J, etc) I've found myself kind of looking at the vintage section, and am kind of debating taking a chance on an older instrument.

What have been your experiences with older basses like that and have they helped you stand out from the endless horde of P and J's out there and has there been any experiences where you've been told "hey, could you get a P Bass or a J?"

As always, pics are appreciated. Cause I love me some bass porn. lol

If I could, I certainly would. There's a great band called Death from Above 1979 who made quite a bit of great noise with these Armstrongs.

Gotcha. As Guy Pratt put it "being a bass player is like being a good waiter, your job is to be invisible"

I was really meaning it in the way of, kind of setting myself apart from other bass players when competing for aftermentioned gigs, but yeah. It's a double edged sword that I didn't think about.

Do you want to just have a different look or a different sound, as well?
Keep in mind that the farther you get from a Fender (or FSO ),
the more it will feel or sound different.
That may or may not be a good thing for you.

Those are some sexy basses too no less.

Yeah, nothing wrong with Fenders or Fender copies, just a matter of there are so many of them. If I'm looking at a band live or their video, always those designs. And I mean they work, they wouldn't be the go to bass for so many people if they didn't, but sometimes you need a little "what the hell is that" factor I suppose.

An Ibanez Ergodyne EDA900 of mine got a lot of "what the hell is that" comments - you can find them pretty cheaply these days. Also a decent player too, has one soapbar pickup and piezo. As outlandish as it looks, it's ergonomic and very comfortable to play.

Also the ESP LTD Stream has a pretty cool body, a little different, and is a very nice player. I have one, in fact just look at my user pic.

Also, there's the Cort Curbow.

Guild b301 is pretty cool looking and has great tone. The neck is a little thick but it has a sound between a Gibson and a Fender.
