I like bright, eye catching basses as well. But more traditional styling... here are some of mine

Not exactly earth shattering looks, but the EBMM Big Al or the EBMM Reflex are both a bit off the beaten path. They're discontinued now, but there are plenty in the used instrument arena. I can speak from experience that the Reflex is a super bass.

As of late, I've been creeping on reverb and trying to find another four string that is unique and sticks out, while still doing the job (which is obviously the most important thing.) Since at times basses tend to be a very homogeneous with the same sort of designs (the P, the J, etc) I've found myself kind of looking at the vintage section, and am kind of debating taking a chance on an older instrument.

What have been your experiences with older basses like that and have they helped you stand out from the endless horde of P and J's out there and has there been any experiences where you've been told "hey, could you get a P Bass or a J?"

I've often thought of getting a Dingwall to stand out..While I am sure those fanned frets are functional, they are also quite "trippy" looking.

That looks like a Spalt, and a particularly nice one too. I'd love one just for the sheer design and engineering aspect, if they weren't so pricey.

Yeah sorry about that, the post was kind of a ramble. Yeah, that's kind of it. Although the more low cost something is, I would assume the more people have it due to the friendly price point. So I guess it's the matter of "sticking out without having to break open my student loan piggybank"

Are you looking for used? Ibanez Yamaha and even Fender made some weird stuff in the 80s. And there's steinberger. But IME people never much know what they're looking at unless it's a crazy color. So maybe some obnoxious color will get it done?

Go for an exotic top. Ibanez has some beauties. Play and sound great. But much like in golf...the crazier the outfit the more game you better have to back it up.

seriously..if you want to stand out..dont worry about what the instrument looks like..being able to play it like a pro at a superior level is what will make you stand out..do you think Ray Charles cared about what his piano looked like..?..no..he only cared about how well he played it.........................................another thing that you could do to stand out is to put a potato down in your pants..just make sure you put it in the front and not the back..
