Unique Bass to stand out

I adore the less 'normal' basses. Hell, my "P Bass" looks like it was put together by art deco and steampunk engineers with a sense of humor (the 'thumbs-up' shaped headstock).
And my favorite J bass is the Ibanez Black Eagle.
For different-yet-familiar I think Reverends are aces, and I like the 2013-14 Gibson EBs too, before they went all pointy and weird.

Washburn Force 8 Chicago. Lotta words for an American made Fender Precision copy, but the one I used to have sounded more like a P than some P's I played.
Ovation Ultra UB1-K. Because the "K" stands for Kahler. As in IT'S A BASS WITH A TREMOLO BAR!!!
Guild SB-202. It's a Jazz bass clone, but heavier. No wait, I mean cooler. It's got a thin neck that's a pleasure to play. That little toggle switch? It's a freaking phase switch, which is a nice little effect to play with at times. Aggressive tone, too.
Music Man Bongo 4HH. TONS of tonal options and a cool look you don't see too much of.
Lastly, find someone who does custom paint for motorcycles and see if they'll do something for you on your existing bass. A custom painted instrument can be a P or J but it won't be like any other P or J. It'll be yours alone.

I always get more questions and comments from the audience when I play my BC Rich Mockingbird, or Steinberger Synapse than any other instruments I play live, and both easily available, and not uner expensive- my 2 cents

I'd say go for a Hofner. They are unique, as a recent poll on TB here displayed that only 1% of us play them and they sound great! You may not be able to afford a German one, but their entry level basses (Ignition) are very affordable and we'll crafted.
