When I was in college I was using an '85 Peavey Dyna Bass with a regular set of D'Addarios and a Peavey Basic 50 from around the same time. The Basic 50 is still my favorite amp, and I've stuck with D'Addarios since.

I played a plywood Jazz copy with an unintentional crackle refin (it really was supposed to be high gloss black) and a Tele mudbucker near the end of the neck. Played this through a Peavey TNT-130 I inherited from my late brother-in-law. Neither sounded particularly good.
