unusual music you're into

Just picked this up. Sully Erna of Godsmack. Has keys, synth, cello, lots of percussion - no heavy guitars :). Mostly acoustic, has a decidedly Eastern flavor. Duets with a female singer on several tracks. A deep, spiritual thread in the lyrics. Not "unusual" in the off-the-path, wacky sense. I like Dirty Projectors, especially the album Rise Above, which is the singer's very odd interpretation of Black Flag's Damaged. Supposedly it was arranged completely from his memory of the album from when he was a kid.

The band Tobacco (see also: Black Moth Super Rainbow) is also a good weird one. Sounds like the 80s run through a digital toilet.

Well if he's not a folk musician what genre would you classify his music as? He is definitely a folk musician first from what i've heard from him.

And I like Sun Ra too. I can see how some might consider him unusual.

That is pretty cool, though I'm usally more into non-weird, non-ethnic hip-hop that just happens to be from poor countries, haha. I'll ask my Brazilian guitarist if he wants to do any of their songs, though. As far as what's also been mentioned in this thread, we already do some songs from Gal Costa's reportoire.

Man Man, Mr. Bungle, and Laurie Anderson are three mentioned in here that I really enjoy.

This thread immediately made me think of Oh Superman. What an awesome song.

Ratatat is another band that some find unusual--I think they're very catchy and listenable, but I've had others say it sounds like fun with MIDI and drives them up a wall.

I've seen Laurie Anderson live a few times , she puts on amazing mesmerizing shows . She's the influence that got me into playing music and artistic performances . She's played with Adrian Belew ( from King Crimson ) , Peter Gabriel , Brian Eno and was or maybe still is ( not sure ) married to Lou Reed .

That's funny. Whenever I hear a tripped car alarm I always sing "Oh, superman" in my head....
You will too now.

What I find funny is the avant garde artists of yesteryear are all pretty mainstream now. Zappa, Eno etc.

My guilty pleasure is Bjork. Something about it. Not sure what.

I also am really pissed at myself for liking Elbow. I really want to hate them (not 100% sure why, though), but I really, really like them.
