EDIT: I'm giving everyone's suggestion at least one listen through and I have to say, this may be the most rewarding thread I've ever seen on TB.

I will always be a hard rock/prog rock kind of guy, but I listen to a lot of wierd stuff, from jazz like Coltrane, to underground hip hop like Kool Keith, and electronica, like Orbital; all kinds of stuff.

Back in the early 90s when I was going to college in the Philly area I started listening to a radio show late on Saturday nights on WXPN, Penn's college radio station, called "Star's End", which is an ambient space music show that runs from 1 AM to 6 AM. That got me into the old Tangerine Dream type of stuff, and the modern artists like Radio Massacre International.

Chuck Van Zyle, an ambient artist himself, has run the show for as long as I can remember, and it streams online so I still listen to it every weekend. Plus he runs a concert series on the Penn campus called "The Gatherings" which is in walking distance from the train station, so I get to those once in a while. Great stuff, and a world away from the usual hard rock stuff I like.

Frank Zappa - particularly albums such as Sheik Yerbouti, Apostrophe', Overnite Sensation, and We're Only In It For the Money.

Sonic Youth - their early stuff, depending on what you consider weird.

The Flaming Lips - Zaireeka particularly is quite weird. One needs four stereos to listen.

I like a lot of mainstream stuff that's unusual for musicians to like. Pitbull, Don Omar, Sean Paul, Buraka Som Sistema, Michel Teló... It's a lot more fun than "real music with real instruments" (well, OK, Michel Teló uses real instruments and his bassist sometimes plays lots of notes, but musicians hate him anyway). I also listen to quite a bit of hip-hop and dancehall from Africa - D'Banj, Timaya, Keko, Radio and Weasel, Mo'Cheddah... somehow it's easier for me to get into than hip-hop from rich countries, haha.

Since we're posting links, take a listen to this: Ugandan Music 2011 with Radio and Weasel ft Keko - How We Do It Remix - YouTube - just pay attention to how the kick drum track is programmed.

I love and collect weird 'ethnic' hiphop. Brasil has some good crossover stuff too, how about this? : Z'Africa Brasil "Tem Cor Age" - YouTube.
