Unusual Rock Trivia?

One of the first recordings Rush ever put out was actually a cover of Not Fade Away by Buddy Holly. The single, released on the groups own Moon Records in 1973, is now out of print, has never appeared on any Rush compilations or rereleases of their albums, and is now a sought after collectors item.

The B side was an original song called "You Can't Fight It" written by Lee and Rustey, which (as far as I can tell) never appeared on a Rush album, either. Featuring an out-of-tune Lifeson guitar and harmony vocals, which Rush didn't often use.

The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia is well known for his noodling, improvisational, and melodic style of guitar playing. If you didn't know he's missing two-thirds of his right middle finger, there is nothing in his playing with either the Dead, The Jerry Garcia Band, or any other of his projects that would make you think he doesn't have all his digits.

The fact that Garcia was able to master the guitar even with only nine full fingers is likely due to how young he was when his brother chopped off his finger...as a kid, if you have a few little things that make you different, it's a good score.
So I got a lot of mileage out of having a missing finger when I was a kid.

But that's nothing compared to the legendary Gypsy-Jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, who's left hand was disfigured in a fire when he was 18, leaving him with only two functional fingers + his thumb for fretting.

Phil Keaggy and Glass Harp once played a dance (that's what they we're called back then!) at my High School around '71 and he was amazing! He could make his guitar sound just like a violin. I read he said losing his finger actually helped his guitar technique.

While nothing can come close to what Django had to overcome(in addition to dodging Nazis), I want to bring up a guy named Bob Sebbo, lead guitarist for an obscure late 60’s blue rock band, The Mystic Number National Bank band. He played lefty as the fingers on his left hand were just nubs. I don’t know if it was from a birth defect or from an accident, but I always admired his determination…

That’s him in front of the drums(and me on the left, watching them).
They only had one album out, but he could go from R&B funky…

…to classic hippie blues…
