Same way I became a “tone wood” Believer ( not to say you are completely sold ). I find walnut to be somewhere between alder and ash. It’s a beautiful looking wood and sounds great. If I were going for a standard jazz tone I go with alder as the alder these days is more consistent sounding. I think that ash being harder to get means getting wood that’s not as reliable as far as tone. My warmoth neck that was wenge/ebony really had that Warwick vibe to it and that also made me a tone wood believers as well ( was on a walnut dinky jazz body ).
