Upating the FAQ for the String forum

Hi all -

A recent post in this forum got me looking over the FAQ for this forum. From what I see, it hasn't been updated since 2014! I would like to take a stab at updating it.

My primary goal would be to provide resources for novices who would like to learn how to change strings properly. It should also have a general description of how to determine the length of string you need, gauge, material, construction, etc. In other words, it should answer the general types of questions novices will have with regard to bass strings.

I would like your help with this. If there are videos or sites that include good descriptions of these topics, please let me know.

Also, if you would like to see something included in the FAQ that I didn't mention, please let me know.

Having which strings will work on which instruments all in one place would be helpful. Yes, pretty much any long scale set will work on pretty much any Fender Precision; but not just any short scale set will work on a 28.6" scale Ibanez MiKro; an updated list of what does fit that scale, or medium scale, et cetera, would save a lot of searching.

I know he goes in pretty deep on set ups here but Roger really does a wonderful job of explaining how he sets up a bass.

Great video on setups. I am looking for something more simple and direct about changing strings. The target audience is a novice who never changed the strings on a bass before.

I just loved the way he was explaining everything. As far as changing strings I should create a video on that and give the YouTube link here.

I was thinking of doing that too. The tricky part is that it requires multiple camera angles to do it right. You need close-ups of the headstock from the side and the bridge. Plus it helps to talk about the parts of the bass involved in string changes. So some editing skill is required IMO.

I'm no Andy Irvine either. Lol but making a video that's straight forward and easy to follow would be perfect for the people doing it for the first time.

Honestly, when people ask me about putting in strings and setting up a bass I give them the Sweetwater link and the Sadowsky video.
