The obvious solution would have been to run 2 ohms of speaker load which would have halved the input voltage and all would have been fine. (No it wouldn’t.)

Doubt it will make the OP feel any better but I use US plug converters also so could have done the same thing...

UK ones are much more dangerous than North American ones, or EU ones that don't naturally orient prongs up.

I don’t remember any of the plugs naturally falling on their backs. that goes for the 5A, 15A and 13A plugs.

The UK plugs are superior, in that the longer Earth pin opens up safety covers over the Live, and Neutral outlets, as it is plugged in to the socket.

Which means that when you are at full stretch, having to do a headstand behind a bed, in order to reach behind a chest of draws, to plug in to a socket in which the safety covers have seized up - you can get legitimately, really, REALLY ****ing ANGRY with an inanimate object - which is fun.

There are also schuko plugs with child safety installed, if you like them (and they do take hell of a force to plug in), but ground pins (2 on pic) make plugging hard enough already lol. Unplugging is even harder, my friend once pulled out entire socket out of the wall, trying to unplug a cable.

Yeah, it's definitely an advantage having brick walls, rather than the drywall/plasterboard that's so popular in America - I've seen plugs removed, that not only pulled the socket out of the wall, but a big chunk of drywall, along with it.

The safety measures are indeed good for kids, and pets, but there's a hilarious/surreal video of a determined adult circumventing them, by attaching a fork, and a foil shroud, to a sensitive part of their anatomy, and sticking it in the power socket (I suspect a moderator would ban me, for posting the video).
