Update On the Trace Eliott ELF That I Blew Up.

Once upon a time I had this super-intelligent tech who worked for me named Somchai. It's a very common name, kind of like John for the West.
Anyway, that cat could almost fix anything. He'd fix CRT monitors, computer motherboards. I probably lost track of the things he fixed for the company.

That said, I doubt he could fix that amp.
Trouble with stuff as it grows smaller & smaller is that it becomes more & more disposable & impossible to fix.

Somchai works on SMT machines now & even helps make the drawings for the PCBs.
 
Yeah, it's definitely an advantage having brick walls, rather than the drywall/plasterboard that's so popular in America - I've seen plugs removed, that not only pulled the socket out of the wall, but a big chunk of drywall, along with it.

It's illegal for an electrical box to be attached only to the drywall in any new construction, it must be attached securely to the structure itself.

It is legal under some conditions to use a re-model box to attach to drywall, but most quality oriented contractors don't do this for power connections where there will be any mechanical loading on the box.

A little off-topic, but only sort-of... I built houses back in the '70's (Northeast US). Drywall scoring for outlets was often quite roughly done, leaving very little integrity around the opening itself. In theory, the boxes themselves should be well-attached to framing, but honestly, were not always. I'm not surprised to hear about this. Word to the wise - treat your outlets carefully as they look much more "together" than they may actually be.

Don't be upset man. As a rule of thumb electronics don't get destroyed completely. Ask them for schematics and get it to any soldering-guy. I'm sure it's all fixable.

That's some of the worst aqdvice Ive seen on talkbass.

"Totally fried" is the extent of the damage.
 
If we were talking about a Russian bass player defecting with a super secret 5lb bass amp previously unknown to the west, then yeah, it might be worth figuring out if the PSU is the only casualty, do the post mortem, reverse engineer thing. At $100/hr though, you might get an engineer to tell you that the Diet Mt Dew in the work fridge is too low to investigate.

BTW I just recently purchased the Elf head and the Elf 2x8 cab and its awesome.

Its a game changer for sure. Whomever thought up these designs were on their game while everyone else was busy coming up with more of the same . These guys zigged while everyone was zagging .

The size, the weight, the concept, the name just a wole direction .

The safety measures are indeed good for kids, and pets, but there's a hilarious/surreal video of a determined adult circumventing them, by attaching a fork, and a foil shroud, to a sensitive part of their anatomy, and sticking it in the power socket (I suspect a moderator would ban me, for posting the video).
I remember seeing American style house being built on TV when I was 12. Man, wooden walls!? I was so confused. Anyway, plugs are very well secured into the wall and are very, very hard to pull out. It took my friend a lot of force to pull it out. Anyway, it is adviced to hold socket with your non-dominant hand to prevent it from going out.

I think you're supposed to plug devices in using your right arm, because if you get shocked it won't go directly through your heart, like it would if you were using your left arm.
Also, don't hold onto anything with your left arm while doing so, because the same will happen, the current will go from one arm to the other, through your heart.

Plastic is isolating material, right? I dont know anyone who died during plugging and unplugging device from the wall. But i know people who got electrocuted by shortage of electronics

FWIW, those flexible wooden walls are safer than masonry in an earthquake.

For those of us in California, and who have taken structural engineering classes, wood has a lot of advantages.
