Is there no power fuse in the elf? My svt and v6 have both blown 10 A power fuses and saved expensive repairs. I got carried away and forgot I was using an 8 ohm cab on both and pop....silence.

There is, but they are not for protecting the amp. They are for protecting people from shock and buildings from fire.

I just have to say that I don’t understand all the people suggesting to the OP that this very low priced amp is fixable given what happened. The chances of fixing this for less than the cost of a replacement and ending up with something that you can have faith in have gotta be less than 2 in 10. It’s a function of the way these amps are made, as has been stated several times.

It's as much how it's designed as it is the way it's made. Both go hand in hand, but as the technology gets higher to brig better performance and features into smaller, lighter products, serviceability can (but not always) suffers.

OP, your tech might tell you he thinks it’s fixable. Go ahead and try if you want but definitely temper your expectations. Your amp is almost certainly injured badly enough that trying to fix it is sub-optimal.

I would sure want to see the repair safety tested to the proper standards, most service shops do not have this equipment. It's important whenever working across the primary/secondary safety barrier on an SMPS.

I had no intention of opening it up or getting it repaired. But when TE made it clear that I have now warranty whatsoever, then is there really any harm in taking a look inside to see how much damage has been incurred? Esp. when a buddy of mine who does such sort of thing for a living offered to take a look at it...

The harm is if it's not properly safety tested after the repair and you get hurt. That would make the current situation much worse, right now you only have an inconvenience (not so expensive in the scheme of things) and a very good learning experience (not just for you but other TB members might also benefit).

As pointed out previously, there is very little they can do. The amp is most likely BER (beyond economical repair) through exposition to conditions the equipment was not designed for. They are not going to provide any technical info to your electronics technician friend either, that'd be like sending an invitation that reads "Here, please clone my stuff and hurt my business!".

As somebody who has had designs stolen and copied (at least in looks and complete feature sets), I don't believe in making it any easier for that to happen.

Depending how many components are on the board, repairing PCBs is more than just soldering a new chip.

Also, it is a $300 amp, so parts and labor will likely quickly exceed the cost of a new amp.

Correct, there are a lot of parts, and it's likely that some of them are epoxied to the PCB (many SMT parts are assembled this way).

As somebody who has had designs stolen, I agree with their policy of not releasing schematics. I also understand their reluctance selling a replacement board to a non-authorized service center. When something goes wrong under these circumstances, it gets ugly very quickly with a really pissed off customer who is already pissed off form the original incident. There's no way to know if the preamp board didn't get damaged as well. We don't know if the PWM modulater started up, which would likely damage things downstream.

Sure, but as products get more and more complicated, and the parts don't have values marked on them, it becomes very difficult. There's nothing wrong with making a thief work for his spoils IMO.

Yes, but providing them a list of parts and schematics saves them an enormous amount of time : Like the difference between copying an entire book by hand and printing it from a file using a computer. The time and resources required to reverse engineer from scratch can make the difference between "not worth the effort" and "super easy money".

Only those marked for 220V. They are clear that the product must match the voltage of the region it's being operated in.

A lot of these class-D amps are simply modules purchased from Hypex or similar that are embedded into the product. Highly unlikely that any schematics are available anyways, or that it is going to get repaired. It is similar to a potted piece of electronics in that sense.

Not in this case, I believe it's their own. Yes, it's probably best treated as a replaceable part. We don't worry ourselves with replacing or fixing transistors inside an IC do we?

Sometimes it means replacing the PCB itself. I've seen more than one device where traces were burned completely off the FR4.

It was in Jan 2018. Palmer is a major music gear manufacturer (Adam Hall group). You certanly can find their stuff almost everywhere. It's a normal thing. I can tell you more - it's not a big deal to get a schematics from....even from Mesa Boogie. They actually printing it in their manuals... Thech21 does the same. Good manufacturers got nothing to hide. They actually can explaine you the price of a gear by pointing on components. " Our stuff is $100 because of this this and that". It's really so. I asked Peavey if I can do mod with their gear and they were nice enough to explain me technical stuff by email. Excuse me for my english

Actually, it says it has over current protection. I am certainly not saying that there is any legal duty to replace, but it cannot hurt to ask.

Overcurrent protection has nothing at all to do with an overvoltage fault like this.

Yes, this is crazy-stupid IMO. It's one of the reasons for much higher incidence of electrocution and electrical fires in some countries where safety takes a back seat to perceived convenience.

@Papz - that first image is why I think the voltage setting is a factory thing. That's not designed for easy access or user serviceability.

That may not be the only thing that changes on this amp when the operating voltage is configured. It's likely that there are other things that change as well, things like standby supply, PWM controller kick-start supply, transformer, fuse. I don't know and can't tell (and I design this stuff), how would somebody else guess any better?

I'm surprised though that it hasn't got a safety fuse inside in case of such a scenario.

But there is, and the OP used the amp's most important feature... safety certification, which means that there was no shock or fire hazard upon failure. Well worth the $300 IMO. ;)

The gut shots reminded me, wasn't 220 VAC discussed in the little Elf's megathread? IIRC, It involved not just the jumper on the board, but a new transformer. This might be good information to find and give to the tech, if a repair is attempted.

This is quite likely (though it's possible that the jumper is all that's required, but I don't know)

Correct, in most countries that take product safety seriously. Go back and look at the power strip picture that was posted, that's some scary stuff there.

He would email requesting the possibility of sending the unit to Meridian to pay to have it fixed. Thought that was fairly evident, sorry.

Have you investigated the cost of shipping both ways, plus the customs clearing (even if he didn't have to pay duty/taxes). That alone is probably $150 or more, maybe a lot more.

I don't think it was evident. The OP indicated his buddy would take a look at the head and TE should offer tech support to his buddy the tech. It also seems the OP couldn't afford to send it to Meridian for repairs, let alone afford the repairs once it got to Meridian.

At least that's what was evident to me.

No, I searched more into it and technicaly you were right. No particular schematics printed in mesa's manuals, just blocks. I see resistor, I see a capacitor, op.amps.. but I don't see values and layout numbers...so yes - I was wrong a little bit (a little bit:laugh:). But still no problems with modding that stuff I asume (If I ever need to mod my Mesa box - it doesn't need any).
 
I have written to them again. Asking them if they can provide tech support with respect to the repairs, as I know a competent technician here who regularly repairs amps and pedals. And has offered to take a look at my unit. He did mention that he might need some support from the manufacturer and we might need to ship in some parts. That was the support I was looking for from TE.

I've still got a power strip like the OP used.
It is nice for devices with Euro plugs or U.K. plugs on them.

FWIW most outlets in Thailand will accept U.S. plugs as well as Euro plugs:

and all public power is 220 Volts
I have that type on the output of my Japan issue voltage regulator, and it puts out 100, 120, and 220, regardless of local mains voltage. It solved all the problems I had with digital electronics and no one was allowed to touch it but me. Otherwise it surely would have caused more problems that it solved.

IMHO, i think you should move on this. If it were some kind of damage it could be diagnosed somehow but the unit Blew. Since its a Micro amp those amps are somehow hard to fix. Its not just soldering some resistance diode or so. If your tech wants to take a look he probably can fix it next to nothing if you are in your luck. But do no expect it. When those units blows they blow in "line" so at the end you could find yourself replacing all parts from board.
At least thats what my tech has told me.
Here's how it looks inside : mostly SMT, switch mode PSU, very small, parts difficult to access... That amp was not designed with repair in mind, like many current electronic devices. When it's broken, it's meant to be thrown into the bin and replaced by a new one.

Tech is my job. If a customer comes with a $300 device fried by mains overvoltage, I don't even take a look at it and rather suggest him to buy a new one.
Work in this kind of stuff is a nightmare and definitely not worth the effort and cost.

What an awful week. OP lost an amp and a pint of my beer mysteriously disappeared at the bar this afternoon. The glass was sideways and beer gone! Should I call Guinness customer service about a replacement?

I'm afraid 12 of mine disappeared last night. Similar. Found them all empty in the recycle this morning. And some drunk guy even cut one open to see how the newer type round ball widget works. That one I found with the cut halves slid back into each other and the ball is gone.
