Update On the Trace Eliott ELF That I Blew Up.

Does the GK have an internal PSU, or is it external?

Internal. Are there any amp heads with an external power supply? Seems that would be not up to code, but I have no idea.

it seems like a very cool head, but i wouldn't say it's a whole 'nother direction - it's not that much smaller than the GK MB200 head, and that gig bag or jacket pocketable amp came first by quite a while.



i would think whether the plastic is isolating would depend on which plastic.

Dealing with Gibson?

I knew Gibson was tangled up in there somewhere. This is one of the things I got it from......

"Results 1 - 48 of 77 - Built in the UK (before Trace Elliot was bought by Gibson and production went to the 'States). Power rating is 300W...................bla bla bla."
In the V-Type forum there was a lot of talk about how Gibson changed the V4,6,8's. which was the only thing I was interested in.

Biggest line lump I've ever seen without particularly paying attention is about 60-90 watts. It's simply not feasible for a bass amp.

Had a feeling I'd come across a class D amp, that had an external transformer (I don't own any class D, but thought I'd seen some from one of the main contenders micro-amps).
 
Lets get all this straight. Gibson Purchased Trace Elliot some time ago (from Kaman?) and moved production to the US. As with typical corporate takeovers someone at Gibson knew better so they started changing all the products. As a result the buying public dropped it like a hot potato. The result was no sales and much debt.

Fast forward Gibson gave Trace Elliot to PV if PV would take the debt. PV did not buy Trace it was given. There was no manufacturing that went with it just the name.

Current Trace Elliot products are marked designed in the UK and USA, made in China. Owned by PV .

For the record PV has never owned Gibson. :roflmao:

I'm pretty sure you are missing an ownership step between KMC and Gibson. If memory serves me right, KMC sold the company to some former employees or directors of Trace who then sold to Gibson after a couple of years.

You know what? You just made me realize had Fender purchased KLM when they still owned Trace Elliot we would have no Elf right now because Fender just shut everything down instead of selling it off. So I have one of these little elves by a hair of the chinny chin chin.

I wonder if PV has the stones to compete with its own miniMega by releasing a 'Gnome', upscaled Elf with more of the Transit functionality. It would be more competition for the other 800w micro amps.

I think GM already disproved the economy of competing with one's self in the biz world :D Oh wait, too big to fail.
Hyundai Kia are doing very well out of one engine for same same cars, across the range. So are European makers agglomerating and doing same.

In the case of the Trace brand, that green logo and the signature sound are all that was left when Peavey took over. I think they have done a fantastic job of bringing it back.

Oh, I think they are amazing, the Elf's. Cheap, light, small, powerful, and they are getting used at gigs.

When GM got bailed out, they dumped the line of cars that was my favorite, not so well executed, but not bad. It was the closest to my dream car, although I would never buy one of the GM's or my dream car. I wanted to see an all plastic bodied car with a good tube frame under that, and an engine the rolled out the front on rails, few connectors and all engine mounted accessories included. Then a nominal fee for a 1/2 hr. engine swap in stead of a tune up, and $100 user replaceable fenders and such. My new dream car is an electric, with modular, any brand compatible, roll out batteries that are swapped for charged batteries at gas/battery stations. I wouldn't but one of those either. I don't run into things, blow up engines, or drive a flashlight :D

I'll let my good friend and fellow Skyhawk fan, @Al Kraft explain where all the roll-out dukey comes from :D I think either of us would prefer a radial engine in our cars and trucks... or an I6 maybe.

It is amazing how few bolts and connections there are to be able to drop an aircraft engine onto a mobile stand. In terms of the quick automotive engine change description I think you were on the same frequency as Preston Tucker (Tucker Torpedo) and Ferdinand Porsche (VW Beetle).

Those were really dambid close. And could be rebuilt 90% at least without pulling the mill. Too bad they rusted inside to out. My HS BFF's oldest brother found out he lacked a semester of PE just before graduation and said the F word and walked out. Had a bug since he was 16, a manual; and hand tools. By the time I was 16 he had the best VW shop in the region, with a huge VW junk yard. He gave my BFF an awesome BAHA converion, with his own invented safety kit (seats bolted to frame so you don't eject through the windscreen with a seat on your back) and a roll cage built into the -trunk-, not the passenger compartment. Big Jugs, independent rear brake levers, stinger header, Baha fenders, lights, revered rims, suspension, all the goodies. Primed and ready for paint. We had a hell of a lot of fun in that bug for a few summer months, while my BFF was struggling to save some cash for the paint (spending most of his money on what we spent money on back then...), then fall came and we went down a fire road covered in dry oak leaves. All was fine until we hit a fairly mile curve and it didn't steer. BFF hit the left rear brake, instantly turning us side ways, then the right to correct, which sent us head on into a small oak tree. The safety kit worked. We walked away. But the front end wrapped around the oak tree and the tow truck had a hell of a time getting it free. Big brother decided BFF couldn't handle it yet and dropped the hot engine into a type 3 wit no mods except the safety kit.

BFF's big brother had a dune buggy in nice shape except the engine. Kept saying he was going to drop a hot engine in it so we could take it to Warren Dunes in MI. We all got drunk one night and he said it was never going to happen and sand watch this, grabbed a gas can and we went to the junk yard out back and he lit it up. That was fun.

He got a cat, to get rid of the rats. Cat got knocked up and made more cats. Then cousins married cousins (common here until outlawed :( ). Then he had lots of cats. He estimated 30 or 40 cats. Stopped by one weeked to do what teenagers did back then and he was on the back porch with a 12 ga. Lotsa dead cats. A pound of hamburger.

Last I heard he was working for a racing team on the East Coast (than from his mom). I think he was my BFF back then. Poor cats.
 
I cry now everytime I see a Jeep, knowing there is no in-line engine available. Ranbler/AMC/Christ!ler I6 was THE best off-roade engine ever. I had one in a CJ5, J-10 (1/2 ton full sized pickup) and currently the MOPAR version of hte same engine in my 99 Grandpa Cherokee. Ironically, my 58 CJ-3B had a Buick 231 V6. Lit up 33 x 12.5's on 2nd gear (no granny, just a 3 spd). Then I modified it for torque and in first gear high range I could lock the front brakes in 1st gear high range on my garage floor, then cut the ignition when it was where I wanted to park. That really killed the high end, bit made it safer on the street and better off-road.

Maybe this has been covered in this 'War and Peace'-length post, but Horse, don't some amps feature an automatic sensing/automatic adjustment for line voltage? Is this uncommon, and from a design/marketing standpoint, does it reach deeply into a given design and how much $$ does it add vs. the more common voltage select switch design?
