So I have this interesting Fender Jaguar Bass that’s made up of a couple different ones. The neck is made in Japan and has a painted red headstock. It’s an amazing neck! The body is from a Modern Player and has a PJ configuration.

I picked this bass up in a trade and I love how it looks and plays but I don’t like how it sounds. The P pickup is an unbranded Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder pulled from a Roger Waters signature bass and the J pickup is the standard one that comes with the Modern Player. This pickup combination just doesn’t sound very good. I have used this bass live a few times but have always just used the P pickup. I have a Jazz bass and a P bass but from time to time I like the versatility a PJ provides.

The pots are a little scratchy, and one of them is bent, so coupled with the Jazz pickup I don’t care for, makes me think it’s time for a bit of an overhaul.

Currently, I am entertaining the following two options:

  1. Replace the Jazz pickup with the matching Quarter Pounder and upgrade the electronics with Traditional Vintage for Jazz Bass®
  2. Replace everything with the EMG Geezer Butler PJ setup.
I am open to other ideas but I am quite fond of the sound of Alnico 5 pickups and prefer to stick to pickups using these magnets.

I can solder and have replaced pickups on a few guitars over the years but I am happy to spend a couple more bucks for the convenience a prewired setup provided.

Both solutions cost about the same but I am currently leaning towards the first one because I like how this PJ set sounds however I have been impressed with the EMGs as well.

I play an wide range of styles but this bass will mostly be used for harder styles of music.
