Upgrade my pickups?

I have a Schecter Custom 5 with Emg Hz's in it (stock). From what I have heard upgrading the pickups and possibly the pre-amp makes a world of difference. Do you think it is worth it? If you do, what do you think a good configuration would be. I want to stay in the modern tone area and probably with emg. I was thinking a DC in the neck and CS in the bridge. Thanks for all replies.

My personal story with EMGs has been that I can't get enough low or low mids out of them to provide the thumping that I want. I have the EMG 35DC in my bridge position currently and I absolutely hate how harsh it sounds, but I have heard that the CS sounds warmer. Its possible that you might want to look into some other options. Right now I'm looking at passive Bartolini and Duncan Bassline pickups to do the job. Also, if you contact a guy named DavidRavenMoon he winds pickups himself and he could send you sound bytes of what hes doing. Hope that helps in some way with my limited knowledge.

The problem with switching from HZ to DC or CS is that the HZ is a passive pickup and the DC and CS are active, meaning you would have to run power for the pups and probably switch pots as well. Never done it, so I don't know how to go about it.

Why do you want to switch your pickups? Personally, I loved the sound of my Schecter Elite-4 that I unfortunately had to part with due to financial constraints. I think my Elite had the same EQ as your Custom.

Anyway, if you're set on changing out your pups and electronics, check into Bartolini pickups and Aguilar pre-amps. I checked out DavidRavenMoon's pickup sound clips and those sound pretty sweet, too.
