Upgrading the Fender Rumble v3 40w speaker

Only applies if the amp can safely operate at the lower impedance. Some CAN operate safely at 8,4 & 2 ohms, some at 4 ohms and above, some at 8 ohms, but not lower. Depends on the amp's design etc.
Please remember, I'm far from a trusty elec expert in these matters.

Expert or not, I do appreciate your input. The truth is, no amp is the perfect amp at the perfect price. How they arrived at 40 W, I don’t know. I guarantee you that if Fender made a bass amp that had a 1x10 at 100 W, sold for, say, $250 and weighed @ 20 pounds , they would sell thousands of them. (and really, why waste time/money with overdrive on an amp that size - that’s what pedals are for). 40w seems under-powered, and some ways it is, but I have to say it works for a lot of situations here in New Orleans.

Many, myself included, did away with, or can't be @rsed with pedals.... so, drive aint necessarily a bad thing.
I used to use a good few pedals, but since using my Fender Super Bassman, which has a separate channel with overdrive that can be blended with the clean sound.... I've rarely used a pedal, save for the occasional octave or wah.
Each to their own.

fair enough - for you. For the vast majority of the rest of us not so much.

Vast majority?

You’re speaking for yourself just like
doghaus spoke for himself as far as his gigging use.

You are highly negative and so fast to jump in and tell someone they are wrong or wasting time and money and that’s YOUR opinion.

I’ve bought a Rumble 40, done the AstroSonic upgrades and its fun.

Granted I have all the time in the world since I only take gigs (not music so relax everyone I’m nobody on the bass or claiming to be) when I feel like it and don’t have to work a day job and I absolutely can afford to waste money on such ventures but it’s fun.

You remind me of someone on a car forum that would tell someone “just buy a better car” rather than upgrading a stock car that isn’t as capable.

We can use that on anything. Why buy A Chip Foose Mustang right?

Total waste of time and money and the vast majority would say go for the Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce Lamborghini right?

Total waste of time and money to work on a paltry Mustang.

Hey, why add a room on to your rancher home?

Vast majority would say a waste of time and money so just save up and buy a bigger house and in fact get it custom built.

I’m an absolute lurker because guys like you pop up like out of the Hee Haw cornfield with the quickness just to be negative.

If I see a thread anywhere of someone into something I’m not or I see as a waste of money I don’t post.

Why? Because telling them not to because I see it as a waste of money or time doesn’t mean they can’t find some joy in it.

I stopped posting here and decided not to pay to become a lifetime member because of such negativity and your screen name stood out because you absolutely are guilty of this.

Anything can be improved.

Whether it is worth it depends on the person making such changes and if they deem it worthwhile then it is!

If someone wants to spend $150 dollars to upgrade a $199 practice amp and they find the sound pleasing and enjoyed the time in making such changes it was worth it.

Sorry for the rant but not really because your negativity absolutely made me decide not to return and post because you are so dismissive of everything as if you are the foremost expert in the world on anything bass.

If you are? I bow down but I’m betting much like any stock combo amp you could probably upgrade yourself too.

Life is short and for someone chiding others on wastes of time you seem to have endless time to post and tell them they shouldn’t.

For me, and I don’t speak for the vast majority of anyone, that seems a bigger waste of time than anyone who may get a little joy from tinkering on a budget combo amp.

Smile.

Seriously this site should be a place for people to be humorous and kind and sharing joy and it shouldn’t be so rigid and definitely shouldn’t be negative.

Hmmm, no kidding? Well I'll take your word for it since I don't own it. Fair enough...never mind my original post in here :D
This is how it should be done.

Jimmy immediately dismissed the idea based on his personal opinion but after reading on it decided that indeed it is fair enough the opinion differed from his own.

He didn’t return to argue further or smugly assert, “well you’re still wrong because you’re wrong and I say so”.

Nope, pleasant exchange and one of those “hey I don’t own one so if you say so? Sounds good to me and enjoy” type of responses.

This is how it should be done vs Bassman Paul who responded only to double down on how wrong this idea was and now to speak for the vast majority.

It just really bothers me because I joined this forum excitedly and have treated everyone with complete respect and it just rubs me so wrong when some folks are happier to jump in to argue than to ever chime in supportively.

I may never return so I’m just putting it out there without a care for what Paul may respond with and hey maybe everyone will disagree with me and they enjoy arguments and constant negativity and a constant “measuring” contest but music is magic and anything to do with bass makes me smile so I just can’t say I enjoy what always feels such a confrontational vibe from some members.

If I see things I disagree with in life I don’t add my two cents of “you are wrong” because just waving my finger in someone’s face and saying I don’t agree will do little to change their mind and likely only result in further disagreement and what is gained?

TECHNICAL questions? 1000%.

If someone posts a fact that is incorrect and as such could lead to poor choices for another it SHOULD be corrected by someone who knows.

Technical has nothing to do with the worth of doing something financially or how it will or will not affect resale value unless someone specifically asks if it is worth their money.

Which I can’t answer. It’s YOUR money and how much you have and how much you want to spend are variables I can’t know so I can only speak from the standpoint of my own wallet.

I can tell you I don’t think it’s worth it but I also think lottery tickets are a complete waste of money and that doesn’t stop a nation of dreamers from purchasing stacks of Powerball tickets.

Which one of those Powerball winners can probably tell me it was worth buying their tickets and guess what?

They’re right. They won and their experience differs from anyone else.

But pure opinions?

Nobody gains from sharing a negative opinion that is not based on fact and is instead subjective.

Don’t like a band I like or a movie I enjoy? Cool. Doesn’t mean I won’t still love it. Seek out what YOU enjoy as I do the same and encourage others to do just that.

Then share that joy with folks who share the same opinions on whatever widget they like better for whatever reason.

Jimmy is a great person, one of the best people I’ve ever engaged with in regards to bass and if I never see you again you merit a public thank you which still doesn’t mean as much as the time you have taken for me in the past has meant to me.

Best to you and anyone and everyone else. I want everyone happy, healthy and playing bass and loving whatever sounds they’re making from whatever gear they have.

The Rumble 100 combo seems to pretty much fit your description, and we hear they are indeed selling thousands of them. It's a 1x12 100 W sold for $299 and weighs 22 pounds.

How they arrived at 40 W, I don’t know.
That's easy! The V3 Fender Rumble 40 1x10 combo replaced the V2 Fender Rumble 30 1x10 combo. It's their good & proper place in the Fender Rumble Family of Fine Fender Bass Amplification. So now you know!

Fender already sells tens of thousands of them. Fender Rumbles are the best selling line of bass amps world wide since 2009. The Fender Rumble 500 alone outsells the entire bass amp production of second place GK.

The "ignore" function was intended to address this exact situation. Before leaving, you could try using it to ignore the members whose posts you'd rather not see and continue to enjoy the forum. You'll see a substitute for their post saying you've ignored content by this member, so you know they posted and can un-ignore the post if you feel like it. Cheers, Bob

Man you put a lot of work into this reply! LOL

I stand by what I said. If you consider me a negative person who "pops out of the 'Hee Haw’ cornfield" then you know absolutely nothing at all about me. I gave my honest opinion both as an Engineer and as a bass player of 50+ years. Even with the ‘upgrades’ the unit will still remain what it is, a cheap practice amp. Some may be able to gig with it but most of us would not. I haven’t played out with that little power since the Sixties.

Perhaps you should go back to lurking before some common sense rubs off on you! :D

Alot of 10" speakers have very low sensitivity in the 92 to 94 dB range

I'll assume the factory speaker is along this lines.

If some of the very few 96dB speakers would work. Which would add weight.
Those 40 watts would now sound like 80.
Well it's still 40 but you almost double the efficiency

I don't know the volume of the combo or if it's ported or sealed. That would help to know

No, it would not be a problem replacing the Rumble 40 stock driver with one rated at 2-300w, but it would likely be a waste of money. The amp really only puts out 40w into 8 ohms. So why put in a new driver? Well, the amplifier and preamp are quite decent. Running it into a few different cabs made it clear that the amp could be used to advantage with better cabs. The tone with the stock driver was too thumpy/muddy for my taste (strictly a personal preference issue). I was also able to make the stock driver fart out well before the sound became dirty. I modeled a bunch of drivers in that cab and decided on the S2010. This was the least expensive driver that I felt would meet my needs for improved (to my ears) tone and small gig capable. The choice had nothing to do with the neo magnet, though it was nice to see that the combo now weighs 17 pounds (a pound less than stock). Compared to the stock driver, it has more bass depth and much better articulation, yet sounds 'full'. Its mids are smooth and it has nice upper mids-lower treble presence. It is also obviously louder (3+ db greater sensitivity) than the stock driver. Like others, I have found the upgraded Rumble 40 to be not only a great practice amp (I prefer a practice amp with good tone), but quite suitable for small gigs (though not for heavy metal and the like).

I find the tone of most small 'practice' combos to be wanting. This upgrade made the Rumble 40 into a practice amp with good tone, and made it suitable for small gigs. I found both those gains to be well worth the cost. I've not found any combo amps below $300 (what I have into this) that sound nearly as good. These amps/combos are marketed to/made for beginners. What if a non-beginner wants a practice amp or something for small gigs. They could settle for the under-damped bass and scooped tone that is so appealing to beginners and sounds great in a quiet audition in the store. Or they could buy one with a decent amp and cab, and upgrade the 'cab' with a better driver and optimum tuning.

The cost, with the new driver, is about the same as the Rumble 100 (100w, with a 12 inch driver). Why not just go for more power and a bigger driver. The modified Rumble 40 sounds (to me) substantially better than the Rumble 100 (same thumpy bass issue), and is capable of about the same maximum volume. The Modified 40 actually works better in a rehersal/small group setting - because of its tonal balance it cuts through a mix a lot better.
I have a v3 Rumble 100 and it sounds awful ... there are no good tones in it.
I just ordered a 40. Hoping the 10" speaker will sound more like the 10's in my v3 Rumble 800.
I LOVE the 800!!! 45yrs as a pro and it's the best. The vintage switch is sublime!
Anyone replace the 10" driver in the 40 with the eminence neo?
Did it get louder?
Thanks
Eddie

Yo, hollow. The Rumble 100 does not have any internal acoustic lining like the more powerful Rumbles do. So, some owners have found that putting some material in the ports has improved the 'boxy' sound they previously got. If that temporary experiment works, then some put a thin (1/8"-1/4") liner on a few of the inside walls for a more permanent fix. ;)

The 40 is the smallest amp that has the same full preamp as the bigger Rumbles, so it should sound a lot like them. But, like the 100, it comes with no internal acoustic lining, so it may need some to get the sound you want. :smug:

Which Rumble 800 do you have, the modeling Stage combo, the head (with what cabs) or the new non-modeling combo? The new 800 combo, with the 1/4 Power Switch, has Neodymium speakers, which some users say sound more clear and bright than the usual ceramic ferrite Rumble speakers. :)

Instead of trying to revive this 4+-year-old thread, you oughta come tell us about your amps in the more up-to-date Fender Rumble Club here on TalkBass. You can get a free membership and share your experience and maybe learn some Rumbly stuff.

Greetings Your Excellency!
I have the new non-modeling v3 800 combo with the neo 10's.
My v3 Rumble 40 arrived this afternoon. I've put it through the paces and it sounds great. Very much like the 800 in timbre and response. Best thing is no hot spots! The 100 has an ugly volume bump

Greetings Your Excellency!
I have the new non-modeling v3 800 combo with the neo 10's.
My v3 Rumble 40 arrived this afternoon. I've put it through the paces and it sounds great. Very much like the 800 in timbre and response. Best thing is no hot spots! The 100 has an ugly volume bump around 125 hz.
The 100 is plenty loud enough for some of my small room gigs. I find the over all volume of the 40 to be very similar. Just a tad less headroom than the 100.
From what I have gathered on talkbass, replacing the stock driver with an Eminence s2010 neo has proved successful in getting a little more volume and slightly better tone as well.
Have you tried this?

I'm ordering an Eminence s2010 neo replacement speaker today for my Rumble 40 v3.
I expect an improvement in tone and volume based on the helpful comments here. Thanks
I saw some mention about "tuning ports".
Is that necessary?
