Double Bass Upton Bass Club

would you think this kind of instrument is easier, somehow, compared to guitar? I've never had any success with string instruments but wind instruments has always been my forte.

My grandpa gave me his violin and I'm just wondering if they would just be the same.

Both are great basses, the Brescian is really fun to play even though it is a fairly big bass.

I saw it when I was up there to visit the shop in Stonington.
Its out of my leauge and I really don't need that so I wasnt looking at it. From what I can gather its their standard hybrid with a special neck block with a brass sliding dovetail joint, that is adjustable (setting the action) with a hex key. Very similar in design to what Babciz does with the neck on their guitars.

They also have some fairly robust looking ATA rated hardshell fiberglass cases to go with the travel bass; figuring someone that is buying the travel bass will be checking it as luggage.

I have no idea what they do with the soundpost. Call the shop and talk to Dave. He was very helpful when my wife and I went there and has fielded several calls from me since then.

Im an electric bass player and I was accepted to Loyola University in New Orleans. I decided that I need to play double bass (Acoustic bass, Upright bass ect). The first place I went was a bad experience with a guy who clearly had no idea what he was talking about. My teacher (electric and upright) sent me to upton and my family got me a 1957 Hausmann bass. Upton set it up and its beautiful. My electric has been getting little love because of this bass. :hyper:

O.K. Sign me up. Upton Hybrid Anno 2008, Opus 201 now has a new home in my living room. :D

I hope to get her up to Stonington soon for a visit to the shop and have them give her a once over. I'm looking forward to learning some upright chops on this baby. Will post some photos when I can.

I am saving up to join this wonderful club. I currently play a 1941 Kay S-8 (Blonde). I have never been completely satisfied with the sound. I am having a hard time deciding what to get once I have the money, which I am getting very close to having. I am looking at the Brescian, the standard hybrid and the deluxe hybrid. If anyone wants to give me and pointers in the direction to go it would be appriciated. I play mostly jazz, but also have regular orchestral gigs. Great club! look forward to "joining"

Well, it's a matter of personal preference and budget. The Brescian, if I'm not mistaken, can be had as a hybrid, a carved flatback, or a carved roundback. The hybrid, hybrid deluxe, Professor, and Concert more or less map to similar choices but with a different body shape. Perhaps you can go and play them.

So about 9 months ago I received my Upton Hybrid Standard. I was so impressed with the sound, workmanship, playability and weight (very light) of this instrument that it became my main working bass over my 7/8 carved bass. The Upton wasn't as loud or nuanced, but when I saw the standard hybrid sounded this great, I had my eyes set on getting a deluxe carved. So, after months of trying to sell my carved bass, it finally sold, and two weeks ago I put in an order for a Deluxe Professor in big leaf maple, sparing no expense and having them build it modeled after the classic Lamyish french shape, with a little less width and a good amount more depth. When I ordered it, I described that I wanted the E string to sound like a very detailed middle finger being waved in your face. I absolutely cannot wait for this instrument, but I must! I will post some pictures along the way. UPTON!

I love mine! Upton makes a beautiful instrument. Sounds great, easy to play, well built and they're wonderful people to deal with. I say go for it.

Got an Upton bow at 5:00am this morning for my birthday, i almost have enough to get my Upton hybrid with all the extras(minus the bow). The bow is fantastic, better than my Glassers, it really brings a nice color to my tone, it helped make my Palatino sound... decent :atoz:

As of an hour ago, I'm the proud new owner of a 2006 Opus 4 laminate, first DB ever, and couldn't be happier! It's in great shape, seems perfectly set up, plays smooth and easy, sounds great.

Lessons start Tuesday - probably a good thing, as it's been 45+ years since my high school bass playing.
