Double Bass Upton Bass Club

Well I am now a double member of this Club, I just bought a used standard hybrid from them. I was looking for a good backup bass to my new hybrid brescian. I was really looking for a ply but then this came along, faster then I anticipated but I stretched some money and am now a proud owner of two Uptons. It is a 2009 Opus 241 and it seems like it is in like new condition and comes with everything (pickup, case, bow) so I feel like I made out pretty well. Now I just really need to sell my Kohr ply to come up with the funds for this new one which will reside in Pittsburgh while I take my Brescian to Boston with me next fall.

So how would you describe the similarities and differences between these two instruments (Upton 2009 Standard Hybrid and Upton 2013 Brescian Hybrid)?

Well I can't quite tell you yet, I just payed for the 2009 hybrid and it is still in Boston. I bought it as a back up bass to my Brescian so I am in no real hurry to get it. They said it should ship out in the next two weeks because their set up guy only goes to the Boston showroom every other week and I think he is just going to give it a look over before they ship it out.

Once I get it I will answer that question because I am curious of that myself. Also it has D'addario hybrid strings on it which I am wondering will be like. Since I have only been a spirocore guy since I started.

I have a 2008 Upton Standard Hybrid. It has D'addario hybrid strings. I like it much but I dont have much to judge it by. I bought it last year, and my only other experience is the really cheap plywood rental bass I had before buying the upton.

I'm happy with the strings. They were on it, freshly installed when I bought it used last year. If I had to buy a new set of strings today I'd probably buy the same. I'm happy with them for arco and pizz.

My playing is really improving. I attribute it to the inspiration from the bass. It sounds great, it feels wonderful. I am trying to alter my stance due to the flat back. It feels best when I'm seated. But I'm back to more of a side stance. That may be ok, but I'm holding up the bass a bit too much. So I have to find a good solid posture.
