Perhaps your student should offer the seller $2k and see what happens. It does include a bag, pickup, quiver, bow, and bow-case. Not bad at all. As I recall, those ply offerings played better than they had any right to play. It might be worth checking out. I have no connection to the seller and/or the bass.

...which is probably why it hasn't sold yet. A hybrid Upton can be had for the seller's asking price, plus a little wait time for them to build it.

They're offering a fully carved gamba roundback for $5k which looks interesting. Very cool to see somebody go head-to-head with Chinese basses at that price point.

Yeah, Kungfu, I gotta agree. $3k for a new hybrid seems a better deal than that used ply at $2900, but maybe it can be had for less. There would, of course, be the added expense of a pickup, case, bow, and bow-case if those are needed/desired. BTW, IMO, that plain-Jane looking $5k carved gamba beats all hell out of the overseas competition in terms of build, sound, and ergonomics.

Very close to mine, which should be finished soon. Mine is Bohemian 7/8ths, all plywood, antique tuners, birch upgrade, amber finish, bumpers. But with Spiro mittels so I can compete with banjos and dobros in the bluegrass jams.

I'll admit to being a leeetle bit put off by the image on that new Pirastro packaging, even though I know it's a variation on the standard EP label. Not being a social justice warrior or anything, just wish they'd thought twice before taking the image of a woman's lolling face and writing SLAP all over it.

You'll be fine. That bass is roughly as bad as the imploded wreck I was given by a retired jazz bassist a few years ago. He joked that if I hadn't showed up to collect it, he was gonna toss it on the burn pile and be done with it. This was the bass he'd played for his entire 50-year career!

Nine months of nights and weekends later, most of the bad old work had been corrected, it had an actual bass bar instead of an integral bar and was singing sweetly under the bow. It now lives in New York City with a young bassist who put a good chunk of change into my pocket.

I'm psyched. I've had all kinds of instruments brand-new and sorta-old over the years but never 19th century.

I haven't had a change of basses since about 2006. That's, like, seventy-five dog years.

The Uptons are very cool just to take it on. There is literally not a single piece of wood which does not require attention to one degree or another. Most shops just say, "Next!"

Picked up my new bass today! Haven't had time to play it much yet. I can say, they nailed the description I gave them. Looks older without being "aged".

It feels nice and sounds smooth.

I can tell you for sure...

I really really love these strings. Wow. Balanced! And a nice thump. No twangs. But they sell themselves short by naming them "slap". They pizz so nicely. Loud and firm too.

Try them if you get a chance.

im not firmiliar with these- they're the pirastro slaps? is that the top or bottom two?

i'd love to hear a sound sample of that setup there.

Got my brand new Upton Standard about 6 weeks ago and loving it. Already been through some gigging paces! Neck is thicker than the student bass i was renting, so still adapting a little bit to the different dimensions. Sounds great and plays like butter. I like the Zyex strings too, but may experiment a bit when its time for a new set.
