Double Bass Upton Bass Club

They had a beautiful 5/8th Concord that had just been finished, awaiting setup when I was there a couple of weeks ago. Very nice basses, and actually pretty classy looking, too. I ended up choosing the same colour for my Bohemian DH (or is that HD?). I'm not counting days, but we pick it up next week.
playing my 2014 Bohemian with the carved German spruce top tonight ... what a nice bass. Punchy, perfect tone, great fingerboard. But I'd never part with my 2009 standard plywood either, it of the mellow tone ... the yin and yang of Upton basses!
Congrats on that Concord, LouisF, it was a thing of beauty sitting in the front of the finishing area bass rack. I kept going back to that bass all morning when deciding on my finish, and it was a no brainer. It should be beautiful on my deluxe hybrid, too, a very warm and rich look. No, I'm not TOO excited...

I've been drooling over that carved black one with the cutaway on thier site for some time now. I'll never buy it because a carved bass and clumbsy owner wouldn't mix well BUT Upton will be getting a call from me around tax time. Since it will be my (hopefully) permanent bass I need to see if they'd make it blonde. Call it an Upton Swingmaster
Not standard, but definitely available as an option. It requires Birch ply, vs. the standard poplar.

My new Bohemian Hybrid Deluxe is alive and well in it's new Toronto home! Played it with my band for the first time last night, and, WOW!, what a difference over my Shen ply. Full sound, easy to play and get around on, and a thing of beauty with a wonderful "old" and classy look to it. One of the best (coolest) parts for me is the byrdzeye maple strip in the tailpiece...they totally rocked it. My wife was taking a pic and Eric photobombed it, so here you go. I'll post a few more pics later. Love it!

My Upton Bohemian Hybrid with Evah Slaps (guts testing). Crappy mic and playing. But the strings feel nice in this set up. Thick sounding too (with headphones)
My section's Principal played a few solos on his Italian-pattern bass made by a Kolstein affiliate in eastern Europe, then played the same solo on my 7/8's Upton Bohemian Hybrid DeLuxe, and the differences in sound were pretty amazing. His bass (strung with D'Addario Hybrids) sounded very clear and "Cello-like" in the upper registers, whereas mine (strung with Thomastik Belcantos) sounded rounder, warmer, and more "throaty" in the upper register. It was like listening to a tenor solo first sung by a tenor singing near the middle of his range, then by a baritone singing near the upper limit of his range. I don't mean that in any negative way, it's just the best simile I could think of to illustrate the difference in tone for the same notes.
We were both impressed by the fact that a bass I requested as an "orchestral build"-- placing an emphasis on big, deep, resonant lows-- sounded so good in the upper registers! I think I remember Gary and/or Eric saying that building a bass involves compromising between the two. They must know where the right places are for those compromises, because the bass I received from them sounds both round and articulate in pretty much every register. It is a point of pride, however, that no other bass in my section can either articulate or project a drop "D" like my bass can! It was like the voice of G*d on the final note of the Hallelujah Chorus during our Christmas Pops Concert!
I'll write up a full review eventually (probably closer to the Anniversary of my taking delivery of this instrument). But, so far, it has exceeded my expectations!
