Well, Thomann are completly different, they buy in bulk, and I'm assuming import by the container, which should be lower than shipping price per instrument.

Markbass being produced in Italy is more expensive in Europe than in the US.
I think we Europeans are paying on top so that the Markbass US prices can be competitive

The difference between prices in US and Europe, this topic seems to pop up everywhere lately.

Part of the difference is caused by the difference in life-standard. The prices in Europe are higher, but usually the salary is also higher, which makes it pretty even.. And if I loose my job, the government will pay me for being unemployed..

Another problem is that the real fancy bass-gear is designed and built in the USA (no offence to a.o. Ritter, Warwick, and MarkBass). If i check my set-up, it's nearly all USA companies like Fender, Musicman and Aguilar. To be honest, the only European stuff is my EBS compressor..

So the best option is to use Ebay and other brand-specific forums if you are searching for something. If you are looking for a Musicman, check the forum on www.ernieball.com/forums. That's how I have found a Dargie Delight (yes, the one Casa de Kick is refering to..).

I've gotten two basses delivered from the states - both were from private ebayers not shops though. Taxes are heartbraking unless they declare a lesser value for the instrument but I'd doubt a shop would do that. And delivery wasn't too bad either - just over $100 IIRC (for delivery in one piece) but that was a few years ago. Still, worked out WAY cheaper than buying in Ireland which is a huge shame cos here in Cork the smaller guitar shops are closing down and no one wants that.

Most of my herd comes from the States and Canada. Import tax is a big issue but it's part of the deal. The import tax is calculated on the sum of cost plus shipping expenses (!!!)

I've had great experiences with Brian Barret (The Low End) and Jim Cobb (bassandbeyond.com); Highly recommended!!!

Other honorable mentions go to Axe Music (axemusic.com), Cameron (tradingbasses.com) and Bass Central

Well.. $1329,- for the Stingray, add $150,- or so for shipping and handling and it's at the doorstep of the European Union.

The EU would like to receive the import duties (I think about 6% or so) = $ 88,74. Then the EU would also like to to receive the VAT, which is 19% in Ireland (I think) = $ 281,01. The parcel operator would also like some money for their effort in clearing the shipment, let's say they'll charge you another $ 30,- or so.

So in total, as an estimate: $ 1878,75, or € 1200,- So not as cheap as you might have thought. For that amount I would nearly sell you my Stingray5..

Yup, last week I found some for that price and less in Germany, along with a G&L L-2500 for e799, but I'm saving for a Fender, so thats the reason theres no thread on my new 'Ray!:D
