USB interface for practice? Or _______?

I'm practicing with an MP3 player into my amp, using headphones. The player (Walkman) can only rewind to the start. I would like to be able to go back to the beginning of a phrase to practice it over and over. If I could even loop the phrase, that would be great.

I've looked at USB interfaces (Focusrite, Behringer, etc) wondering if I could somehow connect to a computer and skip the amp entirely, using Windows Media Player (or some other player) which would allow me to go back to any point in the song.

I'm just not sure what's the best way to accomplish this.

I'll appreciate your input!

Yeah, you can definitely do that. Any sort of USB interface should work ... behringer has a ~30$ guitar link, or you can spend many hundreds on something nicer (I use and love my 200$ focusrite scarlett 2i4).

Once you choose an interface, I would suggest getting a DAW (audacity is free and decent for your application, I use Reaper which is amazing and only 60$), and then you can import the songs that you want to practice and loop them however you please!

I use a Tascam DR-5 recorder as my playback device for practice. It will loop portions of songs and it will rewind to the beginnings of songs and skip forwards and backwards from song to song. I can run it into my amp and listen with speakers or phones or I can run it into one of my Zoom pedals to listen with phones. Audacity is a great tool to have on your computer for processing songs no matter what you use for a playback device.

I was hoping there was a dedicated Reaper thread here on TB. Might be worth starting......
