Used Ric pricing help

Guys,

I was in a music shop a couple of days ago and they have a 73 Mapleglo 4001 for about $1800. Supposedly needed a boatload of work -mainly on the neck but supposedly everything was done and its now back up to snuff.
Cosmetically, it looks pretty good-there's a good sized area at the neck heel on the back where the clearcoat is gone down to the wood. But from the front it looks pretty presentable.

Any ideas if thats a fair price?

Sounds like a good deal to me, Ken; a new Ric costs more than that via GC.

I agree....great deal....and one you could prolly make a profit on in the future if you ever decide to sell it given its age.

It all depends on what you're willing to pay.
Personally, I've seen worse for a lot more.
The prices for Rics seems to be falling back to reality to me, but I'm always looking. I wish I wouldn't have sold my mint '74 a few years ago. I could have retired now.

It all depends on your point of view, a new Ric for say $2150 or a used one that needs work for $1800, I'd go new but that's me. A fair price might be $1200 but Its your money, so decide.

sounds like a decent deal. if its got at toaster checkerboard binding and full width inlays its worth way more than that.

did they tell you what was wrong with the neck? sound like it may have been a truss rod adjustment gone wrong.

Some say the 4001 has a tone that the 4003 can't match. If you buy the 4001, research the '.0047 cap bypass' mode. 4001's have a .0047 cap on the bridge pup (in addition to the usual .047's). This was done to roll off the bass faster on just the bridge pup. Modern 4003's still use that cap, but have a switch so you can bypass it for a meatier tone.
