V-type vs. Alembic pre

Do these differ much in sound? And if so how?
They are both based on the Fender showman amp as far as I know. I cant find an Alembic F1X around here for less than $600-700 and the Trace Elliot is much less when one surfaces.

I've owned both. While the Trace and Alembic are similar, the Trace elliot has a bit more control over the mids. Having said that, I preferred the Alembic over the Trace when set flat. But given the price difference, in your shoes I'd probably get the Trace.

Never tried the Alembic - but the V-type is really thick and juicy.

There's one at Guitar Villa in Nazareth PA.

I really like the V-type preamp, its cheaper then the Alembic and I personally like it better. There again though its a matter of personal taste, but you can't go wrong with either pre!

I think my username says it all... Even when im not using the powerstage of the V4, the quality of the recordings are great.. Mine is the second generation of vtype but ive the old one too, in 4x8 combo form. Ive used to alembic but the Trace gets a big thumbs up from me...
