Vacuum tubes are making a comeback.

Anyway, there is basically *nothing* tubes do that can't be replicated with solid stage technology¹ (employing digital modelling, if necessary). The only thing that is not tube-related but truly imparts a "vintage" tone is the elevated output impedance, which essentially changes the frequency response of the amp according to the speaker's impedance curve. You can achieve this even with solid state power amps (not sure about Class D power amps, but you certainly can do this with traditional AB power amps). You can even retrofit an existing power amp with a very simple circuit to increase the output impedance of the power amp to replicate this "coupling" of amp and speaker. (Essentially, you will get a fatter and possibly brighter sound since the amp will essentially respond to the speaker's impedance curve; this tends to work poorly with bass reflex speakers).

¹ digital models almost always go for a rough approximation in order to make the emulation practical performance-wise. You can make the emulation more faithful, but... There are lots of subtle behaviours that can be proven not to make any discenible difference to the user, so you can forgo implementing these behaviours.
Bass, yes. Guitar, no. Bass is fairly easy to replicate in solid state, equalization, soft clipping, variable damping factor, etc. plus the overriding factor in bass is power, which solid state does so well. Overdrive guitar is a combination of tube clipping, non-linear amplification, transformer inductive flyback, interaction between the speakers, transformer and feedback loop, that misdesigned direct-coupled tonestack driver, the unique sound of the plate voltage dropping below screen voltage in an EL34 true pentode, power supply sag, bias drift and more. And these factors react differently depending on the note played, how it was picked, etc. These behaviors matter. Too many factors to model perfectly, and there is no such thing as zero latency in a model. A tube amp passes signal at close to the speed of light.
The horribly misdesigned 1950s Bassman which became the Marshall is the defining sound of rock guitar to which everything is compared. Besides playing bass, I have both designed tube lead amps and played hard rock lead guitar. Modeling gets close, but no cigar. Maybe half a cigar for some musical styles, but for a metal monster, no way. Note: I have tried the Helix. Close, but that sharp attack chirp just isn't there. Can sense the latency.
