Valenti Silver PJ Five In Progress

I've been messing around with the bass and recorder today, making fine adjustments to pickup height and various things.

I don't know how many pick players are out there, but I find that in the studio it's a very worthwhile tool.

I took the same drum loop and bass part and made three sound clips. One is with the front "P" pickup only. The second is with the pan dead center between the P and the Fat Stack.

The third is .75 rear pickup and .25 P pickup, with extra bass boost since the pan is so far back.

I found it interesting to hear all three in a row...and I thought it might be interesting to some.

First off, let me compliment you on your very clean playing. If I ever needed a bass player, I'd give you call.

Second, I like the tone of the Center-pan the best. But all were good and usable. I find that in a band mix, sometimes what sounds best alone, all by itself is not the best choice to cut and work best in the mix. That said, that centered blend between the bridge and front pickup is a stellar sound.

Lastly, You totally make me want to call Nino and get a Valenti on order. My only caveats or concerns are the weight of the bass, and the profile of the neck. I believe the neck profile has been commented on and it sounds fairly reasonable. How is the profile compared to the new Fender 5 string jazz basses? I find those to be horribly chunky and uncomfortable.

My faves are:
For fingerstyle, either all P, all J, or full blend.
For slap, full blend... maybe some other blending around center.
For pick, full blend or all P. For pick, I just find the J too thin by itself.

My all time favorite sounds will always be:
Fingerstyle: all J with a touch of bass added
Slap: full blend with MAYBE a bit of extra mids pulled out
Pick: full P... maybe with a touch of extra bass

I know you didn't necessarily do all these, but I can tell by hearing what you have done what it'd sound like pretty much no matter what, at this point.

In other words, pretty darn hard to not get a great sound out of this bada$$ bass! :)

I think when mine was built (see avatar) Nino was using the thinner Warmoth necks (thinner than the originals), and i can easily say the neck on that bad boy is mighty fast....and it even has a GLOSS finish! Which, btw, isn't sticky at all:o I wouldn't compare the neck on the Valenti to any off the shelf Fender 5 (or any other part of it for that matter). The neck on the Valenti is much more comfortable and feels much more solid that any fender i've tried recently. (as a disclaimer, i wasn't paying attention to the thickness on the fender, so i can't compare them. Though i can say it "felt" clunky)

I'm astonished at all the concern about the necks of these things boys. Either my Valenti has a randomly thin neck, or you guys are playing thin strips of veneer that are passing as bass necks:p

Thanks for the compliment, Gary.

I would have to say that if you find the new Fender 5's too chunky, you would not like the Warmoth 5 neck either. I own both, so I speak from experience here.

Having said that, I think it's a tradeoff. The more wood you take off the neck, the more you lose on the low end, B string in particular. I'm know that some may feel otherwise, but that's my experience.

Word on the street is that the USA necks have a slimmer profile, so you might look into if/when you contact Nino.
