yeah, man- that bass sounds fantastic and looks wonderful. Kudos to Nino and having you represent with the samples should generate a few orders.. hey, I would have been one, but I prefer the Fender style headstock ( sorry, Nino ! )
just spoke to Carey about a set of fatstacks from my freshly ordered Warmoth jazz 5-
trans white, maple board, white blocks and binding, no pickguard, birdseye pup covers. I have not been a big fan of the Aguilar pre's , but you make it sound great.. i have to decide on a pre...

and i love it - i had in mind another one in chrome since I am not going to do a pickguard ( although i dig the pickguard on yours big time )
another i was wondering about was the Greengrove pre used on Celinders- Celinders sound amazing to me.

I got a Roscoe in the oven, so let's see what that does first!:D It's going to have the same electronics and as yours...and a maple fingerboard like yours, so if it's going to sound somewhat like yours, I'll be happy.:D

Just waking up this thread to see if you had a chance to get the nut slotted deeper to get that action down.

I had the same work done on the Marchlewski fretless. It made ALLLLLL the difference! It made playing so much easier.

Fretless5verfan also tells me he's lovin' his Valenti too. Man, this is dangerous for my GAS-proof existence!;)

Wow, you must have ESP, BG!

I pickup up the bass from the shop yesterday, and I'm sitting here playing it right now.

When I took the bass in to have the nut slots cut deeper, the tech also examined the bass for neck relief, frets, etc.. Just eyeballing it, he identified three high frets. I was impressed, because there was some fret buzz on the D string from the 15-17th frets, and one note on the E string completely fretting out on the 19th fret, while the surrounding notes were okay.

The good news is that the bass set up very nicely...and I'm very picky about setup. I'll be taking it on the gig again tonight.

Tone-wise, the bass has the elements of my Fender American Deluxe P Fiver that it was inspired by, but with a more "modern" sheen to the tone. I'm not sure whether that's a result of the Nordstrand pickups or the OBP-3 preamp, but it's there.

My first reaction was to roll off a little high end, but as I play the bass I find myself rolling it back in. It's that "wet" sound that really articulates the notes. Truth is, I've always associated that kind of high end with a spiked eq that's tiring on the ears...but in this case, it sounds very pleasing and natural.

The bass really has it covered across the spectrum, and the preamp seems nicely voiced. As someone pointed out, the bass control kind of goes from 0/10 to 4/10, and it would be nice it the boost were a little smoother.

Nino's assembly of the bass is really nicely done. The pickguard appears to be hand-cut rather than machine stamped, but it's well done, too
...and years from now you'll know its a "pre-CBS Valenti" :D , you know, before the Valenti/Warmoth Corportation was purchased by Time Warner.

So Basso, IF you were to have Nino build you a bass, what would be the specs???? :hiding:

Wow, that is interesting! Glad it's working out for you. Is the set-up more to your liking? Any issues left to take care of?

Man, I am trying to keep my GAS down to Roscoe GAS, Elrick GAS, F Bass GAS, new amp GAS, and Skjold GAS. I don't need Valenti GAS....although I think I have a case of it anyway!:eek:


So Andy.....coming to the Dallas Guitar show?:D

John, the set-up is exactly the way I want it, and this bass is going to be my #1 axe now.

I can't make it down this month, but by the next show yours will be done, and we can compare the KayCee Vee to the Gru-VEE-tas!

Seriously, dude, you have one ultra fantastic bass there. It also helps that this bass has two things I absolutely froth at the mouth for... a great 70's J tone, and a maple board with pearl blocks and white binding... I just LOVE that stuff...

Adrian, What neck are you going to use? A Warmoth, but with Fender style headstock? Or a different neck? The only thing that prevents me from a Valenti, or building my own Warmoth parts bass is the neck profile. Chunky is not comfortable to my hands. But day-am, that Silver Valenti sure SOUNDS GOOD! And it looks Killer too! Gary

Have you talked to Nino lately? The 5 string neck on my Valenti is pretty thin and switching back and forth between it and my SKB is as smooth as can be:D I think i remember him telling me that the original 5 string necks he used were thicker than the ones that started comming with his geddy Vee and mine.

BTW, GREAT bass KayCee! Sounds fantastic! Gotta love those nordie pickups. I have a pair of fatstacks on my fretless Valenti and i'm loving every second of it:D I promised BG i'd put up some sound clips, but for some reason my trial multitrack studio doesn't want to work today:bawl:

I bought a neck from the warmoth showcase- it should be exactly like the neck on my black bass, but with blocks and binding- it is the assymetric shape. while it's a little chunkier than the F bass neck ( nothing i have played feel as comfy as that F bass neck ) it is not a problem. I am not trying to fly around on that bass, it's for the show where digging into the groove is the order of the day. For jazz gigs and such where i might have to bs my way thru a solo here and there, i take the F bass ( and the warmoth as backup ) - i want to maintain a strong similarity between the 2 warmoths ( existing and upcoming ) but i may have to try the Nordies as well on the new one
i tried to do the 2 F bass thing, but man, i just want to save my F bass from the wear and tear of everyday hauling, also, i am lazy and want to leave it at home and the warmoth(s) at the theater. I could not afford to keep 2 F basses and haul them everyday and no way was i going to leave them there ( you never know )
I find the warmoth easier to play than a Lak 55-94 for example, due to scale length i guess.. i came THIS close to getting a Lakland, but then the idea is to have 2 similar basses and i could not afford 2 laks - besides, i dig the jazz bass thing. . timeless design.
